Trails in the Sky: 1st Chapter (Switch/Switch 2)

Wonder what skies have to do with anything since you walk most of the time.

I've heard about the Trails-series for a long time since I played Ys, being part of the Legend of Heroes-series that appears to be Falcoms biggest series beside Ys. The one thing everyone said was that it was a fantastic to get into, but there was 13 games in the series and where do you start on a game series that started out on the PSP? Well, you wait for a remake on the newest consoles of the first game of course.

As usual I got it for the Switch since then you at least saved on the space on the console, and then just upgraded to the Switch 2. Apparently they are gonna update it to 1.05 any day forward, but I already cleared the game so some of the things I won't be seeing I guess. Story is that the country of Liberl was attacked by it's neighbor the Empire, but after 100 day was freed due to Colonel Cassius Bright who devised the plan to repel the invasion. He then joined the mercenary group the Bracers and trains his daughter Estelle. 5 years after the battle he finds a boy Joshua he brings home and adopts and 5 years after that the kids are doing their Bracer entrance exams and then starts doing jobs while Cassius leaves. An airliner is attacked by air pirates and the Bright kids gets involved since Cassius was on the liner.

From there they travel all around Liberl uncovering a conspiracy from within the Royal military of Liberl to seize power by brainwashing certain targets, for example the air pirates, a mayor here and several military commanders. You also meet several other Bracers that help you on your journey like Zin the Unmovable, Scharezard the whip-wielding drunkard, Agate the red-headed swordsman, Tita the genius, Olivier the imperial minstrel and Kloe the schoolgirl. You also meets people like the reporter and photographer of Liberl News that gives you hints on the overall story or Professor Alba getting in trouble all the time at the towers scattered across the land.

It's a bit slow in the beginning since it took something like 10 hours leaving the first town, but when it gets going it gets going. The story always calls back with persons reappearing in a chapter after the one they introduced and you also gets some in between stories between chapters keeping the mystery pulling you along. Spoilers ahead, but nothing is what it seems and the bad guy is actually someone you can understand. His reasons for doing what he does is logical, and then in the credits pretty much it turns out someone was pulling his strings. Which I didn't see coming. The story is also interesting in that it has a female main character. Estelle is the main character and seems to be in the following two games as well and that is rather fun since she is a fun character to follow. Her goofiness and naive nature make sit fun to watch her collide with others or such things. Funny how no one talked about the woke agenda in this game with the other main character Joshua dresses up in a dress and maid outfit. One character even talks about bringing down the patriarchy. Damn posers in the gaming community.

Graphics are fine, but I noticed a flicker one time, but that was it. Music is alright and you have good voice actors like Matthew Mercer and the guy voicing Doggi and Doug. Interestingly enough the voice lines are kinda inconsistent. There are scenes when when side characters have a voiced line, but the main guys aren't voiced. Maybe it has to do with actions that affects the scene so they didn't voice them, but it feels kinda weird. The second game is on the way and I might have to get my hand on the other games in the series.

Kirby and the Forgotten Land Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Star-Crossed World (Switch 2)

It's Kirby... in 3D!

Well, the games don't really rain over the Switch 2 at the moment so I decided to get Kirby and the Forgotten Lands since I didn't get it for the original Switch and everyone was raving about this game when it came out. I also tried to play the NES games and such that I have for the Wii U, but I got stuck there and then the game come out. Kirby is minding his own business when a vortex appear above Popstar and drag him and the waddle-dees into it. He appears on a new world which looks a lot like our earth where he meet a flying critter called Elfilin that tags along on the adventure as the waddle-dees get kidnapped by some beasts.

Rescuing the waddle-dees allows them to gather in this town area where they set up a smith, shops and so on depending on how many you rescue. You fight through several different worlds collecting blue-prints to upgrade your copy-abilities that you collected from the enemies as well as gold and stars that you need for the upgrade. Each level have several objectives that gives you more waddle-dees and if you are thorough you can pretty much get them in one go. At the end of the levels there are bosses and they also have objectives, but they tend to be more of the variety use this ability to do this which means repalying the bosses a bunch of times.

I'm not that thorough but I got something like 250 waddle-dees at the end out of 300 I guess. In the final stages Elfilin gets kidnapped by a brainwashed King Dedede and after Kirby beats him up ends up in a laboratory where a giant lionman have taken Elfilin in order to merge it with an dimensional hopping entity that the assumed humans captured and then experimented on to leave the planet. So the entity have controlled all the beasts and use waddle-dees to power the whole laboratory for some reason. Still, 4 or something bossfights later Kirby absorbs a truck and like Optimus Prime blasts right into this lovecraftian entity. F***ING AWESOME!

Dramatic Reenactment!

Credits roll and then you get the vision of the lionman trapped in some dimensional rift. You get back and then I finished up the new added stuff for the Switch 2 version, saving the starries to send out an evil space heart, but it fails and I fight the boss again much harder this time. This fight made me lower the difficulty to just be over it. The starries are on some of the levels that changes the level a bit with different plattforming. Anyway, credits roll and then I go and do the lionman quest. In yet another dimension you have to run through gauntles of all levels in each stage to gather the soul fragments of the lionman. Lucky enough Elfilin tells you if you get all the souls in each part so you can find them before going forward and lock you out of the stage so I did all that in one go. After gathering all souls you get a figure and then fight lionman again and the entity that possessed him again and then credits roll for a third time.

It was a fun game. If I want I can 100 % it, but some of the challenges just feels to much to gather the waddle-dees (the starries I believe would be easier since there is no bosses to fight). There's also figurines to gather but I'm rather tired of those things after Minish Cap. Especially since I gathered most of the rewards is more figurines. That or I can probably gamble on the figurines machines.

Donkey Kong Country Returns HD (Switch)

And the monkey business returns.

Well, I still haven't gotten Banaza and it's been a week now. At least I had time to play through Donkey Kong Coutry Returns for the first time. I got it for the Wii, 3DS and Switch, but this is the first time I finish it. I think I played through the first two worlds on the Wii, but got stuck on the boss and then gave up. It wasn't that hard when I played it now, but that could be the Modern Mode cause I was ready to give up at some times.

Story is that one day the DK Island volcano explodes and unleashes the Tiki Tribe that begins hypnotize the animals and stealing Donkey's banans. Together with Diddy they set out to get them back and beat up the Tiki's. 8 worlds later you defeat the big boss of the Tiki and everything's great again, except it reveals the Golden Temple, yet another stage. I can't take it anymore and I really hope the new game comes tomorrow.

I might sound irritated, but I spent 10 minutes on the final hit on the boss and I think levels like the barreljets and rickety rides just is infuriating. I used up something like 30-40 lives on two stages each trying to get through. Glad I got enough Banana coins to just buy more extra lives without problems. It was a struggle for me, and I can't see myself 100 % cause some of the feats to get some of the collectibles are beyond my abilities. I had a hard enough time getting how Rambi and the barreljets worked so I probably had more problem than necessary. Lucky I got the instruction manual from the Wii-version. Remember when games had physical manuals in the box? I do miss those.

Overall I can see the charm of it if you like 2D plattformers, which I do to a degree, but maybe not in 30 degrees Celsius on the first week back at my job after vacation. And a non-functioning postal service for the game I'm actually interested in playing. I find it interesting though that the game had really long load times, especially since I played it on Switch 2 since I thought the console would cut some of these, but maybe there needs to be an update for it first. Another thing I'be been thinking about it that compared to say Super Mario, Donkey Kong very often disrupts the flow in a level. Super Mario feels really great when you just enter the flow and can rush past stage after stage since it just clicks. Maybe I don't know the levels enough or the mechanics, but I just doesn't get that feeling over the game, since when it seems I'm on my way breaking the code, the game changes up and slows down the gameplay, either with the rickety rides or barreljets or something like the barrels that spin... or the bonus stages that constantly take you away from the main game.

Nintendo Switch 2

Can it get any more black? Well, yeah obviously, but you know what I mean.

So it has finally arrived, 8 years after the original Switch I now have the Switch 2. Got it delivered and could pick it up on release day 5th of June 2025. A pity I had a political meeting until 20:30, but the store was at least still open so I could get my hands on it. Spent the rest of the night to install and update it. Getting a bit crowded in the console area so I had to get power from where I have the window lamps plugged in. Need more outlets I gather.

A bit of a hassle to order. I got a preorder in at the same day they allowed it, but got the Mario Kart World bundle. I thought I would get it physical, but when I learned about the download code it was already sold out from my regular supplier. I did look around to see if I could find a non-Nordic version since I could save something like 150 $ or €, but the only places I found didn't export to Sweden so that a no. So stuck with my first order. Still a bit cheaper than other suppliers in Sweden so at least that was a plus.

And then followed bad news after bad news. The game key card debacle, the prices, the micro sd express memory cards and so on (some caused by the tariff war currently going on due to the US). I got one game key card and that was Bravely Default since I liked that game. Got the Zelda-duology as well so I can give my dad the Switch versions and save memory for me plus being up to date with patches and such. Turns out the Switch 2 versions work on the Switch 1 without hassle so that was an unexpected plus (even though I probably won't use it).

Transferred the saves and such things. Had to stop the console from downloading all my digital games since that goes around 600-700 GB and I have no extra micro sd Express card. I try to wait until they hopefully get cheaper and larger. I probably need 1,5 - 2 TB to be satisfied. And still only downloading things from physical editions I got left me with something like 60-70 GB out of 256 GB (mostly due to Konami's Metal Gear Solid collection that seems like a proto-game key card in hindsight since there isn't much on the card). I also already noticed that if I'm going to only go physical I would need to get Switch versions since of course the other companies go for game key cards on things like Dragon Quest I+II HD Remake and Final Fantasy Tactics (I getting a bad feel from you Square Enix). Well, apparently scratch that number since after some updates I pretty much hit the ceiling so I had to get rid of some software, like the Metal Gear Extra section that took over 20 GB of memory. I really need an Express Card.

Now for some positive, I really love how fast the eshop is now. No stagger crashes and restarts it feels quick this time. I can actually browse it and my wishlist without having to start over all the time. The console also feels very nice in my hand, I especially love the pro-controller even if the d-pad doesn't work as good. Not only does it feel great, but the earphone jack in it makes it really great to play at night to not disturb neighbors (or family or others if you don't live alone). A bit low on the sound until I found out how to adjust it to max. Bravely Default had some mini-games that used mouse support and I tried it. One was a music game where you has to use the mouse to align with bars or music notes to get a high score, the other game being a airship minigame where you control the airship with all bells and whistles to find a boss and then fight it. You use the mouse in order to steer and activate all the things in the cockpit like radio, fireworks and so on. Works rather well. The only issue I had was the music game when the pointers ende up on the wrong side which disoriented me, but that was it. Played it on my living room table in front of the TV and it worked as advertised. Tried it on my legs as well just to test it and it was responsive enough, but I didn't try any of the minigames so don't know how prolonged play would affect me. I haven't gotten Welcome Tour and due to that a couple of features will be unknown for me. Agree with others it should have been free with the console since it's a techdemo on the console, but here we are.

Lunar: Silver Star Story (Lunar Remastered Collection) (Switch)

I mean, look at the helmet!

A remaster of the first game in the Lunar-series. Originally for the Sega CD (and was released on the Sega Mega Drive Mini II in Japan, but due to disagreement on payment it didn't follow with the western releases), later ported for Playstation 1 and Sega Saturn and then remade for the modern consoles. Fun with some old-school JRPG. Tells the story of Alex that wants to follow in the footsteps of his hero, Dyne the Dragonmaster. Together with Luna sets out on an adventure, first helping their friend Remus get a diamond from the White Dragon that lives in a cave near by and then taking it to the closest town to sell it. The story balloon from there where you meet Jessica, the daughter of the beastman hero Mel and her on and off boyfriend Kyle the bandit. You also meet Nash that takes you to Vane, the town of magicians. There you meet Mia and are set out to look into the fake Dragonmaster... and then it turns out that the magicians leader have been usurped by an imposter that have you arrested. Mia breaks you out and you unveils this conspiracy. Ghaleon, one of the four heroes joins you towards the white dragon to ask for help.

Well, turns out Ghaleon is the real mastermind behind it and captures the white dragon, kidnaps Luna (over the course of the game singers have been kidnapped so one would assume that's why they got Luna since her singing have magical effects). Alex is saved from the cave by Laike, a friend Alex and Luna met while leaving their town of Burg. Setting off with the other friends Alex looks to complete the trails set by the other dragons in order to become the Dragonmaster and stop Ghaleon. Turns out that Luna is the reincarnated goddess Althena who gave up her life to ensure that humans had free will and stood on their own legs and didn't depend on her. Ghaleon was a bit more cynical and believed humans needed a strong leader and if Althena wouldn't do it he was the one to carry the mantle. And Laike is Dyna and the world is probably our moon and the blue star they have as a moon is probably our earth they escaped from in ancient times when humans almost destroyed themselves.

It's a standard JRPG, I think they modeled it after Final Fantasy IV since Alex turning into the Dragonmaster feels like Cecil becoming a paladin. Nash betrays you like Kain and Ghaleons armor looks  a bit like Gobbels. And their is 5 playable characters at the most! Well, it was fun. One town was the frontier town of Pao where people got sick as the evil songstress sang a song. I think that part is inspired by the Song of Hiawatha or one of the stories based on Hiawatha's life since after watching the feature on Disney's Pocahontas where they described how they tried to adopt it since Walt Disney's days (beside the kid Hiawatha short that spanned a lot of comics) and then ended with Pocahontas... would have preferred the supernatural Hiawatha than Pocahontas to be honest.

It was fun. Music was good and the remastered wide-screen graphics looks good. They have a lot of animated scenes introducing characters and pivotal moments in the story and they due their job, but at times the designs feel a bit generic... and the Dragonmaster armor looks kinda goofy. What is that helmet? It's just a cap! Voice acted and I get it's a new dub to avoid the problems the Sega Mega Drive Mini II had. The ending focused a lot on Alex and Luna's love for each other's and it's sappy, but I'm weak for this romantic moments. As Alex said, the human spirit will prevail. And for future me, remember that when you get into the thieves guild to return and get the locked chests since when I recalled it in this playthrough, two of them was locked out.

Arzette: The Jewel of Faramore (Switch)

I can do the duck-walk!

Like most people in the know, I've heard about the unholy triforce, the three Legend of Zelda games that wasn't made by Nintendo, but contracted out to Philips in a deal for when Nintendo looked for a CD-add on for the Super Nintendo that first lead to the creation of the Sony Playstation that would become their biggest rival and then the Philips CD-I, which pretty much went out and died as a game console. I think I saw the AVGN episodes on the CD-I first, then PeanutButterGamer, then Game Grumps (which I still watch from time to time) and then Pro Jared play through it. Why bring all this up? Because Arzette is a game that tries to recapture the feelings from those game. 2D action platformer with animated cutscenes. What I've seen Arzette is actually a much higher quality, both in graphics and gameplay.

Story is that 10 years earlier Arzette and her friend stopped Daiumur the evil demon lord, and trapped him in a book with the jewel of Faramore. Now, the traitourus Duke have gathered the Jewel and released Daimur and plunged the world in darkness. Arzette sets out once again to protect her kingdom and fight Daimur. And then you go around finding beacons to uncover new lands, find bosses that carry the pieces of the Jewel and helping people to boost your stats and such. Took less than 4 hours to finish the whole game (including 100%). Also finished Hero Mode which as I suspected was a bit frustrating, but it at least forced me to do things in right order since you just couldn't tank the damage or luck out on some kills. You pretty much needed the edge to finish certain parts of the games. That of course unlocks even harder modes and I think I will stop here since I play to have fun.

Overall it's kinda fun, both to see the nods to not only the Zelda-games, but also the Hotel Mario game with the bonus room where you close doors and such. It pretty much alludes to that Arzette is supposed to be Zelda, and her bard friend would be Link. Daimur is obviously Ganon, greenskin and all as well as references to his capture in the book like in the CD-I games. You also got the original voice actors for Zelda and Link from the CD-I games and they do a pretty decent job. I enjoyed playing it, never got difficult, but that could also be for me playing with health restores since I just couldn't be bothered. 100% also gives you a short little cutscene at the end with the book flipping the pages while a woman hysterically laughs. I assume a new enemy since Daimur got killed off. The end credits even spelled out that Arzette will return so I've got something to look forward to.

Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition (Switch)

Finally it arrived, the remaster of the best Xenoblade Chronicles-game! 150 hours later and I can say I pretty much say I did a whole lot better this time around. I checked my old save and realized I only finished something like 65 % of Mira, but in this version I reached 97-99 % (pretty much only super-bosses and conditional Tyrants that I at the moment just doesn't care about right now... or rather, I can't get a one-shot build on my skells to work). Now, why did it work better? Mostly since I knew FrontierNav and could place the probes a lot faster. I saw myself boasting about 6-7 million credits on the Wii U, I reached almost 90 million this time around. Also, 100 000 Miranium and constantly 350 000 credits on each tick (I might have looked up a more efficient way to place the probes, but I fixed 100 000 credits and 30 000 miranium on my own). I also noticed I didn't fix the missions I thought I had, like Blood Lobster. I'm a bit more thorough this time around overall it seems.

Changes then? Well, for one the gamepad wasn't here so they put it all on a button to bring up the map. Felt like second nature the first time I tried it so it worked beautifully. They added 4 characters and allowed you to change them from a menu instead of finding them in their habitat. Which allowed me to actually get Lao to the max with affinity. They also put away a lot of the restrictions on who to bring on certain missions and made sure all characters leveled at the same time so no need to grind each and everyone. On one hand, makes the game a lot faster, but I kinda feels it destroys the narrative a bit since they don't actually need to be there (still shows up in the cutscene) and since you don't need to put in the time with the characters I didn't get to know them as much this time around.

They also added some story chapters after the final of the original game. Another phenomena happens that seems to destroy the planet and as Team Elma tries to figure it out a skell shows up that is the original Ares Prime that the other skells are based on. It was thought destroyed in the intro cutscene from the original game, but apparently it ended up between dimensions together with its pilot Al. Al is the last human since he needed a real body to pilot the Ares that Elma had brought from her planet as it also was destroyed by the ganglions and ghosts, the two warring sides that ended up destroying Earth. The ghosts reappears here led by the Old One, the ganglions god. He is named Void and captures the Ares Prime and steals it's power core. Al and Team Elma prepares the humans and allies to evacuate Mira since Void is destroying the whole planet. They still need the cores for the Ares to make a dimensional jump since that what happened. As Earth was destroyed the whole universe followed, but the White Whale made a dimensional jump by mistake and that is why Mira doesn't exists on a star map. Al figured it out trapped between dimensions and is the shadowy figure that found Lao after the original game, apparently in-between dimensions include the after life. Anyway, they learn that Void created the ganglions... and since then they fight each other? I think the plot starts to loose me.

They finish preparing the escape so all evacuate on the redesigned Ma-Non ship and flies toward Void and his continent to get the power core. Team Elma is scattered so you have to collect them all, get six spears that are used to bind Void's power... you know, it sounds a bit like the final battle against Vecna in season one of Critical Role? Kinda fun then that Matt Mercer is Lao, and Doug is... Dogi. And isn't H.B. Albert Wesker? A pity that the new voice actor for Vandham doesn't really match him. Anyway, do all this and fight Void who seeks death since he was a Samarian that was punished to eternal slumber for... some crime. He dies, the orbs are returned and Al in the Ares Prime take his place on the ship to make the jump. Team Elma buy him time to gather enough energy. Your avatar is furthest away destroying the ghosts while the order to retreat before the jump is told. It's really intense if the avatar is going to make it or not, but it does and we're off, ending up in another dimension.

On one hand I kinda dislike this since it means Mira gets totalled and nothing really mattered. I can't wrap my head around why the Ganglions fought the Ghosts or why Void fought the Ganglions. I expected Lao to return and it feels a bit like a cop out that the post-credit scene of the original just was the after-life and such. On the other hand, if this sets up for a sequel I'm all for it. They ended up on another planet and the most fun of the original game was running around and exploring this unknown world and setting up probes to gather resources. You need another planet and it felt big back in 2015 (or 2017 when I played it), but with the open world games of Zelda and other things you need to go bigger and Mira only had those five continents... well, I know we have 5 continents as well, but still. A lot of water on it as well. If they build on that I can see it working out, but if this is it, I'm not gonna lie, feels a bit underwhelmed for waiting 8 years for a continuation. Especially since my interpretation was that they built up the planet to be something akin to a living organism that caused all this, but no answers there, and we didn't get why the mimeosons survived or who Cross (our avatar) exist. I mean, our avatar can pretty much be another being that happened to take over a mim for all I know.

Final part, it was fun to replay it and see the allusions to the twists and I actually double taked on some conversations when they mentioned the mims and such before the "reveal" and I can se how I didn't caught this before. I also played it as a woman this time around (I actually restarted since I played the first 4 hours as a guy again, but that would have been boring, besides she looked a lot better in the bikini, a damn shame about the boob slider... I mean... let's move on). Knowing some of the deaths and how to avoid them is kinda fun and now we have three save files compared to the original one. And the online, since you have to pay for it now they changed it radically. You get reward tickets every day meaning you can play it offline from start to finish. They added missions that reward you with miranium, battle points, affinity and so on so no need to fear. This is the ultimate version of this game. I still recommend it since it still felt awesome, although can't beat the highs from the first time playthrough.

Doom II (Switch)

Where's Doom Guy?

Finally played through Doom II after playing the first game back in... must have been 2020 or 2019. And... it's Doom pretty much. Overall I say this game is harder and not as fun as the original. Music is good, but not as iconic as the original game. Got lost in several stages and the only way I could get through it was using cheats to clip through walls. So yes I cheated. I played it normally until I arrived in a level where you start in a room with several door and you have to survive and figure them out one by one. I did that, but fell backward into a poisoned floor which killed me, so I had to restart but had none of my weapons beside the gun. I got some weapons back, but after being killed two times over I looked up the codes and started playing around.

30 levels and and in the end you defeat the Icon of Sin in order to stop the invasion of earth. A bit more enemies than last time. I got Doom 64 which I might play through since I'm waiting on Xenoblade Chronicles X and I don't want to start long RPG's since I know that will be a 100 hour commitment or I could continue Fantasian, but I still have a negative reaction to that game.

Star Wars: Dark Forces Remaster (Switch)

Down with the Empire!

Another Doom-clone I got in a sale and a Star Wars game at that. Never played before, but I did play the sequel, Dark Forces II. My friend had a demo of it and we played it a lot, but we couldn't finish it and mostly due to not understanding what we were doing. Then my neighbor got the full version so I borrowed it and played a bit with it. Got all these cheat codes as well which enable me to actually play other parts than the first level. Got stuck in a level since I didn't understand what I was doing there either.

Well, this game then. Basically like Doom, run around and shoot enemies and find keys to complete certain objectives. A bit more story focused than Doom and the objectives aren't just kill everything (but that helps a lot), sometimes it's place this tracker or place this explosive and so on. Story is that the Rebel Alliance is hiring Kyle Katarn, a former Imperial Officer turned mercenary to first grab the plans for the first Death Star (which now is contradicted by Rouge One if I recall correctly). After that one of their secret bases is destroyed by some unknown force... The DARK FORCES!!! Kyle and communication operative Jan Ors is sent out to discover the secret of this new enemy.

During the adventure you rescue the spy Imperial officer that briefs the heroes in Return of the Jedi (oh and you get the mission by the lady rebel leader also from that movie), gets captured by Jabba the Hut, fights of Boba Fett and blows up some imperial bases. It's a fun distraction, but I wouldn't got around the game without using the cheats I found on the Internet to get past certain problems, mostly unlimited Ammo, Pogo and Invincibility. Started using them in the prison rescue since I couldn't figure out the elevator puzzle and short on ammo and I needed ammo to go between areas... I think this game might be a bit badly designed to be honest. On the other hand, I can actually jump and what a difference that make!

Still, it feels like Star Wars with the music, sounds and all the designs. Would love a remaster of the second game since there you have FMV and Jedi Powers... throw in Rebel Assault II... and Shadow of the Empire as well, but keep the Cutscenes from the N64 version. Might be a bit harder than I would like and some of the puzzles are hard to figure out I feel. Or I'm just stupid, but we now that can't be it!

Ys Memoire - The Oath in Felghana (Switch)

Wait... which Oath was it we took in Felghana?

Been a while as of writing. The usual winter slump so I haven't finished a game since december and as of writing we are one week from March in 2025. It's also due to playing a game I really had a big dislike for, which was Fantasian Neo Dimension. I got half way through and just didn't have any fun with it and after spending 1 hour fighting a boss to get killed I just gave up. Maybe I will come back to it, but I just don't feel like it.

So instead I went with Ys Memoire - The Oath in Felghana which I gathered is a remaster of a game from 2005 that was a remake of Ys III: Wanderers of Ys. It uses the same type of gameplay as Ys Origin and was a much better time. Much shorter as well with something like 12-15 hours of gameplay on Normal from start to finish. So Adol Christin and Dogi has arrived at Dogi's homeland, but monsters are running around so Adol gets to rescue Dogi's childhood friend Elana Stroddard. More trouble brews when the corrupt lord of Felghana, Lord McGuire tries to gather the 4 holy statues in order to take control of an ancient god. Helping the lord is Dogi's childhood friend Chester Stoddard and Elana's brother.

Fight monsters, level up, get money and Ravel ore to buy and upgrade your equipment and then of course you have to defeat the evil god yourself. There's revenge, betrayals, heartache, tears, laughter and Dogi crushing a wall. It felt amazing. And somehow Adol loses all the equipment I fought for, the sword I get since it's story reason, but the shield and armor? And level 1 again? I maxed him out both in Ys I & II as well as Ys X that take place before this.

Overall, just what I needed. An relative easy and short experience. Dogi is the same voice actor and it was fun to discover that the voice actress for Elana is the voice actress for Colette in Tales of Symphonia. And the game ends with Dogi staying and Elana standing and waving Adol of as she cries... man, Adol ends every game with a beautiful woman crying over him. Makes me think of the Quest for Glory-series and makes me wondering if they like that series will end with a final series and the possibilities to meet people from all the games. Before that I still have Ys IV-VII to play.

Dragon Quest III: HD-2D Remake (Switch)

The father of JRPG:s!

So the long awaited remake of the third Dragon Quest game finally came around. I played one version before, the mobile port they added to the Switch. I recall liking that so I was a bit itching to play it again, and this time in SquareEnix HD-2D engine they used for the Octopath Traveller games. It starts like normal, some personality quests and once again I got Lazybone... I mean, he only wants me to push the rock once, why would that make me lazy? I can also choose difficulty affecting how quickly you level up and how much gold you earn. Since this wasn't my first time playing the game and since I gotten a taste for classic challenges from RPG:s I went with the Draconian Difficulty (the Hard mode that is).

Glad I did since I ended the game with the Hero having a level of 54 and I can't say I grinded that much in comparison (maybe getting a thief from level 1 to 40 to check all the areas for treasure might have had something to do with it). Still, the game starts of as usual, get your party and head out. I chose the classic combo of Hero, Warrior, Mage and Priest. No class change. On one hand, a really good combo for battles since you have everything you need, but the additions of mini medals, secret areas and monster collecting makes the choice a bit harder. I should probably have taken a Hero, Thief, Mage and Priest since that allows you to find secrets, sneak up on monsters and using healing and attack spells like no other.

They've also added the monster wrangler as a new class that has a very easy time getting the monsters since it bypass all the other problems, like using musk to hide your scent, evade to make yourself invisible and Padfoot sneak up on them. It's worth getting the monsters since fighting in the monster arena gets you great stuff (and finding things with the thief does as well, no problem with money this time). I didn't fight in the arena until the second world when I had pretty OP party. Got me through all the battles in the first world, couldn't get through in the second world.

Played the game to fight of Zoma in 74 hours which is a bit longer than in the first version I played and there is much more, besides the other things I've mentioned you also have secret areas that doesn't show up on the map, but contain recruitable monsters and/or items the thief can help you find. And going around the world with a thief to find them all after the fact probably added up (I also trained the monk up to level 39 or so at the same time just to see it). You also can have a constant reminder where to go next which I believe activate when you here information to that affect, but I'm not sure. You also have a recall function where you press X and the latest conversation is recorded to look up in the menu, great for keeping track of hints in the game (wish I got that in the beginning and not when I ended up in the second world).

Still, even with all that I'm still too dense at times, like forgetting that the destroyed town should probably have something to say at night so I went back there several times wondering why I can't get the orb there. Or trying to traverse Soma's Castle and after almost giving up finding the hidden passage below the throne. Still, it is fun playing it and compared to the Final Fantasy games I've constantly have to wrestle with which version to play, this is the best version as of now. I heard there was some controversy since they put shorts on the female warrior (not mention that it isn't called male or female, but type A or type B). Now, I'm a man that can appreciate the exposed skin of 2D characters, but this scandal(?), is just in bad faith. I mean, I spent the final portion of the game with my male hero and his three supporting female characters all decked out in bikinis because those where the best armor for them. Why are then the Internet complaining about some shorts on the female warrior when I can use the "blessed bikini" on her? What's even the problem? Other people are ****ing insane!

The ending then, they put in a too be continued for the next games that will come in 2025 which I'm already waiting for and apparently they are gonna give you some bonuses for clearing the third game so I'm ready. They also made a twist in the ending with the dragon lord egg left by the dragon queen. Apparently it's protected by the priest Hargon... which was the big bad for Dragon Quest II... implying that the dragon lord in the egg might be the dragon lord you face of in Dragon Quest I? I'm excited. I wonder if they are gonna add the party system into the other titles or if they are gonna stick with the original intent of the games which is fine, but kinda makes the games less varied. Still dread the kamikaze monkeys in the second game. Anyway, I got the end-content dungeon to traverse in this game left to meet the Almighty and get some wishes. First encounter was no problem, the trolls I just brute forced, the second encounter went to hell with Barmosa wizards spamming Kaboom several times killing the party before I could react... this will take some time, but Fantasian Neo Dimension comes out next week as of writing. Choices, choices! Hope I don't have to finish the extra content to get bonus for the other games. If I would repay this game, I would probably go for a Hero, Thief, Mage and Priest line-up and after getting all the stuff for the the Thief class change it to a warrior since the damage is rather needed. Or should I do it the other way around since the Thief passive stealing ability is kinda useful for farming seeds... as stated, choices, choices.

Happy Christmas everyone! When this went up I was asleep waiting for Santa as it is Christmas Eve in Sweden and we celebrate Christmas the day before everyone else.

Tintin Reporter: Cigars of the Pharao (Switch)

First proper Tintin Adventure!

Saw the teaser for this game on a Nintendo Direct and just had to get it, you know how much I like Tintin. I preordered the Limited Edition and then just waited. Took forever for them to release it on the Switch, so much that the physical was delayed for me since it couldn't be shipped until a couple of days after it was supposed to arrive. And in the meantime I heard some not good news about it. Apparently a mobile game they spruced up and upon release on consoles before the Switch it didn't work properly all the time. So I had lowered expectation going in.

Putting it in the first thing I hear is the theme from the 90's animated series and I just have a big smile on my face. And then the game starts, and it's album accurate in that it begins on the cruise as Tintin chase after a papyrus that this Egyptologist lost. And they just threw you out there without explaining the controls for the Quick-Time Events. And they just went on and on. I was not happy. Bad impression. It gets better after you left the ship escaping the Duponts and all that. The tomb of Kih-Oskh was a real highlight with just great amount of puzzles. A bit many stealth sequences overall that can go on my nerves followed by chase scenes in the rest of the game. Story is that on a cruise toward Shanghai Tintin gets roped into looking for a lost tomb of the pharao Kih-Oskh which turns out to be the headquarters for an opium smuggling operation. Tintin follows the lead toward India and helps a Maharadja stop the smugglers from extorting his people. All the while Tintin is hunted by the Duponts since the smugglers have implicated him as an opium dealer.

Overall a mixed bag. I enjoy it since it Tintin, but if I didn't know anything about it, it would have made for a irritating game to play through, and I wonder if some of the things you were supposed to do only works by reading the comics first. At times though it feel better paced out story wise since I can see and get the hints of the different smugglers. Mostly since we have more time with them. Graphics wise, they look like what they should look like, but I can see that the game hardly can work at times, throwing in textures a bit to late, first scene with Snowy really didn't work. Also, Tintin looks rather worse than other characters, Rastapopoulos probably looks the best for some reason. The game also crashed on me once while playing and the last Snowy sequence was a nightmare in trying to find your way around a mountain getting the final stone to push. Maybe they will follow it up with Blue Lotus, but I can understand if there's no follow up on this series.

Ys X: Nordics (Switch)

Finished yet another Ys game, the latest released and it take place... between II and IV? Well, that screws over the timelines overall, but apparently a remaster of III is coming next year (that is 2025 I might add as of writing, not 2026 at the posting of this... post). So Adol and Dogi is traveling with a cruise ship on the Balta sea (which I assume is the Baltic... but since there is a volcano here I would guess we are somewhere in the north Atlantic with Iceland maybe being Balta Island). Suddenly the ship is attacked by Norman vikings belonging to the Balta Seaforce lead by Princess Karja Balta. And after the battle Karja decapitates the captain as he hasn't paid the dues and this is his second warning. The Normans take them to Carnac, an island under the Seaforce protection. The citizens and the Normans have an uneasy alliance and while Adol and his friends wait for another ship to continue their journey he walks around the shore and finds a seashell. The seashell belongs to a water spirit named Lila that grants him the power of Mana, meanwhile Karja shows up and wants to spar with Adol again. Both uses Mana and suddenly Karja and Adol is shackled together by a Mana link so they can't leave each others side.

But the bad luck begins piling up. Griegrs attack the town, undying monsters that can only be killed with Mana. After trying to save the townsfolk the whole town is raided and Karja and Adol escape with a ship and Grenn, the mayors son and friendly militia guard who leads the Youth Brigade. As they are followed by the Griegrs the Seaforce finds them and destroys the Griegrs. They are brought to Balta Island and joins the Thing led by Jarl Grimson, Karja's father. They draw up a battle plan to fight this supernatural threat. Adol must take a test to become Karja's Shield brother so that they can set up and patrol the seas. They also encounters a puppet griegr which turns out to be Dogi, cursed by one of the generals leading the Griegr. So you basically travel the sea, looking for griegrs to fight and save the townsfolk you can find. So a bit like VIII and the rescuing of the shipwreck survivors.

Meanwhile, after picking up certain artefacts or a just before death experience Adol seems to be sent to some limbo realm, Viewpoint Island, where you meet this old man who has lost his memory. Since we are in Scandinavia I thought it was maybe one of the gods, like Odin (or Harr as he is known in this game), except he haven't lost an eye or maybe Thor. He usually helps you unlock more abilities from your artefacts and then you return to use them to avoid certain death or progress the game. On the seas you also find runestones bearing the tale of Rollo of the Bloody Sea, a Norman Viking that sailed the seas 100 years ago that spread fear across the world, until he mellowed out, built the Duchy of Novgorod and then disappeared in the Great Calamity that seems to have drenched the whole world or something.

So the plot is that the Trident, the three generals that is, is looking for a vessel for their liege, an offspring of Rollo. Turns out that it's the Balta family and since Karja is the only living member (since her father married into the family) she is the target. Killing the generals makes her absorb them and awaken a bloodlust and berserker mode hinting on Rollo's return. In the end you find Lila who is the one that made Rollo turn nice by purging the malice in him which created the Trident that she then sealed away. They somehow caused the Great Cataclysm and then was sealed of again, until they were able to escape by trapping Lila in the same prison. And that was something like 6 months ago that kicks off the plot. Rescuing Lila you are called to look for Viewpoint Island and it turns out the old man is Rollo and he survived 100 years ago and ended up on Viewpoint Island where he prepared for the day to be defeated to stop the Tridents to repent for all the bloodshed he caused.

Adol and Karja kills him, a viking funeral later, Adol, Dogi and Dr. Flair (another traveler with them from the second game) is taken to Spain or France according to the map by Karja and the game is over. Plays mostly the same as earlier games I've played in the series. Naval combat is new and a bit of fun distraction. Played it on Normal and the game isn't that hard. Hardest boss was the worm you fight directly after the demo ends and that is due to the low resources you have. In the end you have so much bottles and lunchboxes it is hard to kill the main characters. I even succeed putting on an item that blocked experience and turned them into gold. Did it at level 70 and realised it before the fight with the super boss. I still beat him and got 4 levels right out of the gate. I then used the level and EXP boosters so that I could bridge the gap I've missed out. Still feels VIII is better, but the more colourful world places it over IX for me. Speaking of IX, in that game there was also viking gods and such... but they have changed the name for some reason. Grimnir is now Harr (which is Odin the Allfather) and I just don't get it? Why? Was it to close to Griegr or something like that? Well, gotta wait for III and then see if there will be a XI.

The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom (Switch)

Girl Power!

So this game came late to me. Damn postal service couldn't get in on Thursday so it didn't come round to Monday the week after. Made it hard avoiding spoilers since many channels I follow on Youtube decided this is the game to stream. Tough luck for you, I won't watch it until I finished the game, which took me to Saturday the same week. Gonna be interesting to see things I missed.

So the big thing about this game, that was spoiled at the release so nothing missed there is that the first 5-15 minutes you start at Link fully decked out and after fighting Gannon Link gets trapped in a rift and Zelda has to step up to fight for Hyrule. On her journey she has the spirit Tri that helps her mend the rifts and create echoes that she can use to traverse the world, fight monsters and solve puzzles. During the adventure you get Links items, sword, bow and bombs that you can use during a fighter mode that you can use to fight of monsters and such for a short time.

So arriving back at Hyrule castle Zelda tells her father that gets swallowed up by a rift and out comes an imposter that sends the guards after Zelda. Escaping with the help of Tri and Impa Zelda ends up in Suthorn village, the home of Link. From there you mends the rift near you, then either Gerudo desert or Zora river. I choose Zora first and then Gerudo. After that I traversed the world to get heart pieces, stamps and smoothie ingredients before tackling Hyrule Castle again, rescuing the King.

After that three more rifts appear, Eldin Volcano, the Wetlands and Lanurya mountain. Went into the wetlands first being locked up by Deku Scrubs and destroying Ghoma from creating cotton candy webs for the scrubs so that they get swallowed up by the rifts. After that Eldin volcano and their new Goron Elder that need your help. After that Lanurya mountain where I meet this snowman Condé that looks like the snowmen in the DS Zelda games or Twilight Princess. And I never felt this bad for the snowman that only want's to do good so that his big brother returns from his hot air ballon adventure after their father died. Damn! It was also this boss that gave me the most trouble, Schorchill. You're supposed to use fire attacks on his helmet when theres ice and ice attacks when theres fire. Now, I used the wizrobes, but they didn't seem to hit so I ran around a bit until I looked it up. After that they worked rather well. Miss that Tri doesn't give you a hint or something like the companions in the 3D Zelda games.

Which probably brings us to the mechanics of the games. The echoes are fun for puzzle solving. Getting too high ledges or using the abilities to get a monster behind the bars in order to hit a switch is rather interesting. Battle on the other hand is either so simple you steamroll them, or it's a drag as the specific monster needs to do certain things in order to defeat the enemy, usually elemental monsters. Bosses is elevated by using the fighter mode, but take the final boss, Null. If you have enough smoothies you only have to run around so that Link can fight him off together with an echo of moblin level 3 or the lizard enemy level 3. So I spent most time running around since you can't attack directly anymore since you have given Link his items back and there isn't much puzzles in the boss fight more than recognizing patterns and avoid damage.

Null is also an interesting boss concept. He is a creature of the void that want everything to be nothing, but the goddesses appears and create the world to contain him and he in retaliation creates the rifts, but the goddesses sends spirits like Tri to contain them. And apparently Gannon is an echo from Null. His plan is forcing Zelda to get the Prime Energies (which is the Triforce, or the Golden Power or whatever they call it) so that he can steal it and therefore destroy the whole Universe. Which you and Link stops when you rescue Link.

It was a great game. Didn't have to much trouble, there's one chest I haven't figured out how to get and I'm missing like 5 heart pieces, 8 echoes and something like 9-10 might crystals that you use to upgrade Link's weapons. Somehow the short horse race gives me more trouble than the others. And there is some challenges left in the slumber dojo. The graphics looks like the Link's Awakening remake and that looks rather well. Music is ok. I can hear the melodies that they are going for like Zelda's lullaby and such, but I can't say that any track stands out for me. A bit short, it only took me something like 27 hours to get through and there is like 6 main temples, plus Hyrule Castle and the starter and final area. So 7-9 dungeons depending on how you see it. Link to the Past at least had 10 main dungeons, Hyrule Castle and Gannon's Tower. That is 12 dungeons to explore. Or maybe the Ship in the bay and Eastern Palace counts as well... have to think about that. Speaking of Link to the Past, the map is taken from that game and expanded so you go beyond what could see in that game explaining thinks like Gerudo, Gorons and Sea Zoras not existing in that game, as well as Deku Scrubs. Although the Deku Tree is not in the Wetlands with the Scrubs, but in the Lost Forest to the north.

Civilization VI (Switch) Revisit

And Atlas shrugged! (Don't know if it said in the book since I've never read it, Objectionist theories never really vibed with me)

Decided to revisit the game in the wait for the new Zelda game, Echoes of Wisdom. And I got all the DLC and such so it would be fun to try it out... and they just released the news that Civilization VII is on their way. So perfect time to try out to see what it is like if I would try the next game.

I tried starting the huge world map with fixed starting points and marathon mode. Slow as hell, each turn took a minute to load and such. Started as Japan and thought it would be rather easy as you where on an island. Worked fine until 2 barbarians galleys showed up and wrecked my fishing industries. So I restarted with the standard Earth without fixed starting points so suddenly the empire of Japan starts in the north of Italy.

Still a bit slow so I had to google up what one could do, so I limited the autosave and took away animations and such. Wished I could get still pictures of the other leaders, but hey, it worked a lot better, even if it's still a lesson in patience. So I began conquering most of Europe and from Spain bridged into Marocco and then Arabia lost control of one city that wanted to belong to me. And then I used my military might to conquer other cities that have rebelled so I had a bridge from Turkey to India. Meanwhile I sent settlers to Australia and from there taking every island I could get my hand of. I only lost one city which was Tokyo that I settled on Cuba, but they rebelled and went to Poland that had all of North America.

In the end I was able to snag a diplomatic victory by paying 5000 gold to each civilisation that had an emergency which if you win grants you two points. I think the final point came from an olympic event after I put every city on getting champions. My enemies tried to negate it by voting for me to loose 2 point every Session of the World Governments, but they should have fixed their environmental problems and stop Global Warming... I guess this is the reason it's seen as "woke" by some groups on the internet. Still, I won on prince level without cheating... except when I reloaded a save before I declared war on Mongolia in protection of a city state and I got wrecked. Lesson learned, don't care about the smaller states unless you have a very big army.

Tried the huge world map with the fixed starting points so it worked a lot better. Sadly the volcano near Kyoto erupted 5 times within something like 10-15 turns so that was a very big problem for me. Overall it was fun getting into again. Took me a bit, but when I got into how to micromanage cities and such it became a very interesting game. But I might not feel like everything works fine, for example districts and that is mostly due to my inability to get rid of ones that doesn't work or is standing on precious resources. I had two damn oil fields being locked out as districts was on them. I mean, how was I supposed to know in the Middle Ages that my harbor in Scotland or Entertainment District in the Sahara would end up on oil fields in the modern era? Lucky two others was accessible, but that was on my new Australia colony. I think I lost another resource in the Ruhr Area, but I never understood what it was.

Overall, still fun all these years later. Will I be getting VII when it releases? Probably not, the Switch hardly can manage this game and no offence to the actress being the narrator, but I don't have the same relation to her as Leonard Nemoy or Sean Bean. Although Leonard Nemoy is still the better choice.  Lucky Zelda stopped me doing just one more turn.

Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia (Castlevania Dominus Collection) (Switch)

The moon rises yet again!

The final of the three DS games on the collection. And I've played it not that long ago after playing through the Advance Collection since I just wanted to continue the stories. Pretty much the same as last time, except that I actually had to play the game legit from beginning to end. And I recalled that in a normal play, the game is hard. Went through a lot of potions and meals I tell you.

Overall, it get's better as the game went on, but it's a bit obnoxious. A lot of item and glyph grinding to finish quests or even get enough levels to stand a chance. Cause you gotta do the quest of the villagers to get useful items like the more effective potions and armors. At least the castle actually feels like fully explored compared to Portrait of Ruin. Nice with a lot of voice clips, both the intro scene, all the villagers and a lot more monsters having voices beyond the succubus.

So of the three, I actually end up with Portrait of Ruin the best. Didn't think that back in the day. It's more fun to play through and the choices of weapons and such is more interesting.

The Dominus Collection then. It was really good. The main three games are good either way, I've only played around the Haunted Castle bonuses on there since it's bit much for me with the arcade feeling of it. One thing I was bothered with was that the three main games wasn't in release order of Dawn of Sorrow, Portrait of Ruin and Order Ecclesia. No they put it in Order of Ecclesia, Portrait of Ruin and Dawn of Sorrow. I get that they where going for in-game chronology order since Order of Ecclesia is 1888, Portrait of Ruin 1944 and Dawn of Sorrow something like 2036. You get art and music so it's all nice. Some people wished for Symhony of the Night and Rondo of Blood, and I would like that too, but hopefully there will be another collection... and I would like the 64-games as well to see if with a better controller I might get around it. Or Konami can give me a Mystical Ninja collection so that I can have Mystical Ninja 64 Starring Goemon at home.

Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin (Castlevania Dominus Collection) (Switch)

Time to break out the whip again!

Well, continued with the other game in the series, Portrait of Ruin. Nothing much to add from the last time I played it. I somehow enjoy this game a bit more than Dawn of Sorrow this time around. I actually almost 100 % the main game by grinding all items from the monsters and such, I got through the Nest of Evil around level 65 compared to the level 80 I was on my first playthrough. Probably got lucky since the Castlevania III cameos got into a loop where I could stand in a corner and whip Trevor until he died, beat Grant after that and Sylpha was rather easy after that moment. Didn't take 8 hours this time, but it was enjoyable enough. It might have to be due to the music, I prefer the music in this game than Dawn of Sorrow, it is more "forceful" here compared to the other game.

That and the customisation of the main characters. It's fun to change sub-weapons and such compared to the soul system of the last game. The only one that would probably need some work though is Charlotte since it's a lot of changing around spells and such for her being good in special situations. Jonathan is a lot better. Maybe it's the fact it's a whip-wielding hero with options. Or that the quest system is actually rewarding in revisiting area beside grinding. Although, one quest I realised doesn't jive with modern life and that was to talk with Wind when it's between 12 and 1 (am or pm). I work or sleep at that point, I had to do that at midnight between Friday and Saturday pretty much expanding the game for a couple of days. My whole weekend was off after that... god I'm getting old!

Some things I realised I like less with the game is the map, the castle map is so small, hardly any secret rooms and the left side of the castle map is empty. Usually the map covers the whole screen. And the paintings are pretty much a straight line with a loop back to the beginning. And the fact that the second half of the painting is just the same first maps again is rather boring. But it's a solid game, and there is no touch screen shenanigans that hold Dawn of Sorrow back... at least in the main game.

There is the sisters mode that exclusively plays with the touch controls on the DS. They did the stick option like the in Dawn of Sorrow for the ice breaking ability. It works rather well, I find that Loretta's Ice magic being the best option to traverse the castle since you only need to aim direction. compared to Stella's slash attacks where you need to mov the cursor back and forth. Didn't finish it, I thought I just needed to reach Brauner to finish the mode, forgot you needed to defeat the bosses in each painting in order to get near Brauners sanctum. Maybe I will play the alternate modes some other time when I play through all the games. Less grinding for most of them since there is no items to get.

Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow (Castlevania Dominus Collection) (Switch)

They are all here!

Well, I didn't think they would port the DS games when I played through them after the Advance collection, but here we are and I had to get them right after the Direct. And I finished Dawn of Sorrow three days later. And I had a better time it seems than last time. Is it that I played it on Normal Mode? Is it due to not having to use touch screen controls? Maybe the bigger screen? Who knows, I enjoyed myself greatly this time either way.

It's the same story so no need to add to that from the last time, so let's go on how the game play. And as mentioned there are improvements. The Magic Seals work using button prompts now, wish they weren't there at all like in Julius mode, but it's workable. Didn't have that much of trouble when I trained up some of the seal combos. They are also nice enough if you miss the first attempt they highlight which buttons to press. Thanks for that!

Then the screen, since it was a duel DS screen in the original they decided to put all three beside each other with the main screen being the gameplay and the others being a status screen and a map. Diminish the need to shuffle around the other screens. Played it mostly on handheld mode due to using the TV for other things. The screen is bigger than my 3DS so no problem with that. It works fine. You have the option to change the screens for example emulate the DS screen set up, but not a single lone screen. I don't know why, at times I would like to have the whole screen with just the battle, for example bosses since I don't need the map and mostly you don't need the status screen. A bit of complaint online about this as well.

I won't play Portrait of Ruin right now since Nintendo also released the next Famicom Detective Club the same week so that will be the weekend game, but I will continue the Dominus Collection after that.

The Excavation of Hob's Barrow (Switch)

Do you read Sutter Cane?

Got this game during the summer sale of 2024 after playing the demo that takes you through the first day pretty much. It's another horror point and click game like the Last Door. And since I finally finished the Lovecraft collection I have some more references to take from... that and I watched John Carpenter's In the Mouth of Madness for the first time just before playing the game. Maybe it pulled me to get it as well. Kinda funny that the fiction town of Hobb's End from the movie takes it name from the archaic english word Hobb that apparently means devil or something like that. So with that I knew there was something bad in the end of the barrow.

Did I ever tell you my favourite colour is purple?

Story is that you play as Thomasina Bateman who have been invited to Bewley by a man named Leonard Shoulder to help in the excavation of Hob's Barrow. As she arrives Leonard is nowhere to be found so she has to walk around the village and get the clues to find the barrow and entering it, all while some townspeople gives her a hard time. Turns out that Thomasina's father was involved in the excavation of the barrow 25 years ago, but that attempt ended in tragedy as her father ended in a coma which her mother explained away as a horsing accident. Another of the excavator hang himself after losing his hand. And her father seemed to be investigating the barrow in order to trap an ancient spirit that apparently caused famine in the countryside.

You have nightmares, creepy music and I believe rotoscoped animation of people and animals that always give a creepy vibe. Not to hard, the only time I checked up on a puzzle was when I was in the barrow and couldn't get a door open even though I knew the answer and tried to enter a code, but I must have put in the wrong input since it didn't get through until I had the picture just in front of me on the computer (and I took a picture on my phone from the game and that didn't work). There was one puzzle that began feeling silly as I played when I needed workers for the excavation and the only one that had them was the local lord so I needed milk for the maid of the manor, but since I couldn't get it directly from a goat, I needed to heal an old man and the only way was finding two ingredients and both had their own distinct quest to get them before getting the damn milk. A bit convoluted I might say. Lucky the fast-travel system worked really well when I got where everything was.

Overall a great atmospheric story worth a playthrough. I though it was gonna be more violent than it was, especially when they slap an 18+ rating on it and the trailer really shines the spotlight on an incident that really don't amount to much. But great voice acting, although the in between narration from Thomasina is noticeable much higher in sound than the rest of the game and it puts me out of it at times. Great to play during Halloween.

Ghost Trick: The Phantom Detective (Switch)

After three Etrian Odyssey games I needed something different so I picked up Ghost Trick that have been on my shelf for almost a year. It's a remake of an old DS game that was made by Capcom and the same team behind Ace Attorney. I remember reading about the original in some gaming magazine, but I never got it. Maybe since I hadn't played any Ace Attorney games at the time and I frankly just thought the main character looked super weird with his spiked hair. Glad I got another chance to rectify that mistake.

Story is that you awake as a ghost after you have been killed. A lamp possessed by another ghost tells you have to do your thing and then your of to find out who you are, why you where killed and try to maybe stop that. Your power's consist of manipulating things, travel through telephone lines and go back in time when interacting with dead bodies to 4 minutes before their death to change their fate.

During your investigation you have to save the police detective Lynne that constantly get herself killed so you babysit her most of the time, but during this you uncover a strange tale of an innocent death-row inmate and former police detective that is about to be executed and the machination of "the Manipulator" that forces people to act against their will. And in true Ace Attorney fashion the story just staggers and staggers. There's a collective of spies from a foreign country, which also consist of robots for some reason. The Manipulator turns out to be a dead man from 10 years ago that was killed by a falling meteor that lodged a piece into him, pretty much making him immortal. And who's face is your own. You also meet Missile, the dog from the first Ace Attorney game that helped you in the final episode with Von Karma.

I got hooked rather fast and I just ran with it. The story kept me engaged to the end and the twist and turns makes it a great story. The graphics are really good and especially the animation of the characters. Well, mostly Inspector Cabanela and his dancing movements. And then the music is amazing. The puzzle was manageable most of the time. Wasn't until chapter 14 I began looking up when I sat 5-10 minutes trying to get how to get it. Took me around 12 hours, I didn't 100%, for that you needed to finish the chapters on a first try pretty much and then you had some extra sliding puzzles to finish with moving pictures. I did one and tried a harder difficulty and just couldn't get on. You get concept art and such to look at, but I got other games to play.
