The Adventure of Elliot: The Millennium Tales Debut Demo (Switch 2)

Not another fairy game!

Watched the July 2025 Nintendo Partner Showcase direct and as most people it wasn't that much to write home about, but they at least announced a demo for a new game from SquareEnix in the 2D-HD engine. So I got it and since there wasn't any other games at the moment in the wait for the Kirby game. So I started playing it and it has some similarities to games like the Mana-series with different weapons... no co-op though. Story is that this kingdom is protected by a barrier from monsters and some new ruins have been discovered so the king ask the adventurer Elliot to investigate the ruins together with his fairy companion (which after playing Bravely Default sends out some different warnings than maybe the creators anticipated... or I don't know really). So you go out and fight monsters till you reach a dungeon where you fight a boss and suddenly you stand before the Door of Time.

Now, what is the Door of Time (besides being named after the door of Time in Ocarina of Time)? Don't know, the game didn't tell me about it before but the fairy wonders if this is the Door of Time and Elliot seems to know what that entails. And after entering the demo ends. I'm driven more by story than gameplay loops, so I can't say that this demo did it for me, since I don't know what I should care about in this game. No one has told me what the importance of the ruins is, or the Door of Time. In the wilds there was no one to talk to except the fairy and they never commented anything important.

We will see if I get it, but since it's SquareEnix I assume a Game Key Card from the get go and since the storage is limited it might be digital and a sale before getting it. It looks great though and I like 2D action adventure games. I didn't find the scythe so wonder if that will effect anything.

Bravely Default: Flying Fairy HD (Switch 2)

I thought I had written about the original game since it came out in 2014, but apparently I didn't began writing my synopsis on finished game until half a year later in 2014 so I never did it. The closest when I was writing about the follow up demo for the second game, Bravely Second. Still haven't finished that main game so might continue with that, but that will be a while since the first game has a tendency to overstay it's welcome. And I had hoped just writing about the differences from the 3DS version and skip the story and such.

So basically the story is that the great chasm swallows Norende, the pastoral town where Tiz Arrior lives together with his brother. His brother dies in the Chasm and Tiz wakes up in the nearby capital being saved from drowning in a river. He returns to the Chasm and meet Agnes Oblige, the vestal of Wind that looks into the Chasm together with Airy the Cryst-Fairy. They are being hunted by the Eternian forces that are intent on destroying any believers of the Crystal followers. They meet with Ringabel that have lost his memory and joins them after following instructions in his journal. They also meet Edea Lee, daughter of the Grand Marshal of Eternia that switches side after the cruelty shown by the Eternian forces. Together they travel to the four crystals to awaken them and banish the darkness.

The story is pretty much callbacks to Final Fantasy I-V. The order of the crystals is reversed from Final Fantasy I with wind, water, fire and earth. The class system is brought over from Final Fantasy III and V. Braev the Templar looks a bit like paladin Cecil (and Artemis looks like his dark knight version, but that looks like all dark knights in the series) from Final Fantasy IV. The other classes looks a bit like other classes from the games. The magic system is basically the same as Final Fantasy and so on. The biggest difference being the summons that are unique and looks like modern things like planes and trains, but stylised to look like summons so like the plane looks like a bird and so on. Had they done them like in Final Fantasy with Raruh, Bahamut and so on togheter with Moogles and Chocobos it would be the continued series if they hadn't done VI and so on.

So you get the crystals awakened, fight the asterisk bearers to get the classes and some story bits. Each country is being undermined by the Eternians in different ways so you have to clean it up. You also meet the Sage Yulyana that helps you and then Lester the vampire. After defeating them all and fixing the crystals a pillar of light appears that you enter, Artemis Dim, the dark knight follows you and after defeating him his face is revealed showing Ringabels face and then you are transported back to the beginning of the game. The game is in a time loop like the original Final Fantasy as well. SO you fight the bosses again to awaken the crystals and get more story bits. You do this five times and is in one way kinda admirable for them to stick to it, but it gets repetitious since the dialog repeats as well, making you wonder do they remember what happens between each jump? Especially when the game pretty much spells out the plot for you, Airy is a lying fairy (which at the reveal shows up on the title screen as well). She pushes our heroes to go through this since she is in actuality a demon from the abyss that helps her lord Ouroboros to connect 10 000 worlds to release Ourobors from his prison and invade the celestial realm. I got it and the numbers on her wings showing how many there is left is kinda neat when you notice it, but the characters didn't seem to get it.

You defeat Airy and then fights Ouroboros on a stage that looks like the battle with Chaos from Final Fantasy I and he begins destroying world after world (if you where a bit more social on the 3DS or Switch I have the feeling they would have named the worlds after that compared to "Someone World". Our heroes almost gives up, but then heroes from other worlds helps out (named after my AI buddies since I'm a very anti-social person). Our heroes stand up for a final battle and the background have my mii in the background (Ouroboros hints that a celestial is in Tiz and on the 3DS they used the camera to show the players face making it kinda obvious that the celestial realm is our own). You defeat Ouroboros, everyone returns to their own world (meaning Ringabel went back to the world prior to the starting world).

It's a fun game, but the endgame really drags. In both versions I maxed all jobs and levels. It doesn't make you overpowered, you still need to figure out how to break the game and I don't know if I did it on normal on the 3DS, but I got to the final subplot battles in chapter 8 and tried to go directly to Airy but got beat up so bad. That's when I needed a break with Minish Cap, but after that I just lowered the difficulty to easy and ran through the game as quickly I could. On the 3DS I spent over 100 hours and on this I was something like 90 hours and it's to much. The classic games take something like 20-30 hours and at the 40 hour mark you enter the pillar of light for the first time and would have been better if you maybe had done 2 passes, but no, 5.

What did they add then? Since it's a launch game for the Switch 2 they added things to show the systems functions. They added two minigames that is mouse based. One is a rhythm game and the other is a game where you pilot the airship. By playing you unlock entries in the journal about people you meet and you also get flower points which you can use to get equipments and items. Played mostly Love on the Battlefield-theme, and by looking at the whole Linked Horizon concert the sound was taken from I learned that Motoi Sakuraba was the man playing the synths, you know, the Golden Sun music guy. Best song ever! I spent a couple of hours playing the rhythm game with the song the singer sings. It's rather good so that wasn't a problem, but I thought I could get several ribbons so I grinded up to over 150 points and turned out I could only got 1 of them from the store. There is another in the game, but that was the moment my carefully thought out plan went away and I stuck with easy mode instead. Still, I got a silver sword as fast I got to the mini games and that was useful at the very next part of the game since it was great against undead that was all over the next area.

So, buy it if you are interested. I got it as a game key card and I wonder if it will be the only one I got like this. As I said, haven't finished the direct sequel and haven't started Bravely Default 2 either even though I have it for Switch. Will take some time before I play it though. The new Donkey Kong game comes out next week (in 2025 when I write this) so I will play something short in between.

Dragon Quest III: HD-2D Remake (Switch)

The father of JRPG:s!

So the long awaited remake of the third Dragon Quest game finally came around. I played one version before, the mobile port they added to the Switch. I recall liking that so I was a bit itching to play it again, and this time in SquareEnix HD-2D engine they used for the Octopath Traveller games. It starts like normal, some personality quests and once again I got Lazybone... I mean, he only wants me to push the rock once, why would that make me lazy? I can also choose difficulty affecting how quickly you level up and how much gold you earn. Since this wasn't my first time playing the game and since I gotten a taste for classic challenges from RPG:s I went with the Draconian Difficulty (the Hard mode that is).

Glad I did since I ended the game with the Hero having a level of 54 and I can't say I grinded that much in comparison (maybe getting a thief from level 1 to 40 to check all the areas for treasure might have had something to do with it). Still, the game starts of as usual, get your party and head out. I chose the classic combo of Hero, Warrior, Mage and Priest. No class change. On one hand, a really good combo for battles since you have everything you need, but the additions of mini medals, secret areas and monster collecting makes the choice a bit harder. I should probably have taken a Hero, Thief, Mage and Priest since that allows you to find secrets, sneak up on monsters and using healing and attack spells like no other.

They've also added the monster wrangler as a new class that has a very easy time getting the monsters since it bypass all the other problems, like using musk to hide your scent, evade to make yourself invisible and Padfoot sneak up on them. It's worth getting the monsters since fighting in the monster arena gets you great stuff (and finding things with the thief does as well, no problem with money this time). I didn't fight in the arena until the second world when I had pretty OP party. Got me through all the battles in the first world, couldn't get through in the second world.

Played the game to fight of Zoma in 74 hours which is a bit longer than in the first version I played and there is much more, besides the other things I've mentioned you also have secret areas that doesn't show up on the map, but contain recruitable monsters and/or items the thief can help you find. And going around the world with a thief to find them all after the fact probably added up (I also trained the monk up to level 39 or so at the same time just to see it). You also can have a constant reminder where to go next which I believe activate when you here information to that affect, but I'm not sure. You also have a recall function where you press X and the latest conversation is recorded to look up in the menu, great for keeping track of hints in the game (wish I got that in the beginning and not when I ended up in the second world).

Still, even with all that I'm still too dense at times, like forgetting that the destroyed town should probably have something to say at night so I went back there several times wondering why I can't get the orb there. Or trying to traverse Soma's Castle and after almost giving up finding the hidden passage below the throne. Still, it is fun playing it and compared to the Final Fantasy games I've constantly have to wrestle with which version to play, this is the best version as of now. I heard there was some controversy since they put shorts on the female warrior (not mention that it isn't called male or female, but type A or type B). Now, I'm a man that can appreciate the exposed skin of 2D characters, but this scandal(?), is just in bad faith. I mean, I spent the final portion of the game with my male hero and his three supporting female characters all decked out in bikinis because those where the best armor for them. Why are then the Internet complaining about some shorts on the female warrior when I can use the "blessed bikini" on her? What's even the problem? Other people are ****ing insane!

The ending then, they put in a too be continued for the next games that will come in 2025 which I'm already waiting for and apparently they are gonna give you some bonuses for clearing the third game so I'm ready. They also made a twist in the ending with the dragon lord egg left by the dragon queen. Apparently it's protected by the priest Hargon... which was the big bad for Dragon Quest II... implying that the dragon lord in the egg might be the dragon lord you face of in Dragon Quest I? I'm excited. I wonder if they are gonna add the party system into the other titles or if they are gonna stick with the original intent of the games which is fine, but kinda makes the games less varied. Still dread the kamikaze monkeys in the second game. Anyway, I got the end-content dungeon to traverse in this game left to meet the Almighty and get some wishes. First encounter was no problem, the trolls I just brute forced, the second encounter went to hell with Barmosa wizards spamming Kaboom several times killing the party before I could react... this will take some time, but Fantasian Neo Dimension comes out next week as of writing. Choices, choices! Hope I don't have to finish the extra content to get bonus for the other games. If I would repay this game, I would probably go for a Hero, Thief, Mage and Priest line-up and after getting all the stuff for the the Thief class change it to a warrior since the damage is rather needed. Or should I do it the other way around since the Thief passive stealing ability is kinda useful for farming seeds... as stated, choices, choices.

Happy Christmas everyone! When this went up I was asleep waiting for Santa as it is Christmas Eve in Sweden and we celebrate Christmas the day before everyone else.

Final Fantasy (NES Classic Edition)

So I played through the Ys X: Nordic Demo in wait for the full release of the game on Switch, but I beat that and my copy of the Tintin Reporter game was late so I thought I could fire up the NES Classic Edition and play through the original Final Fantasy. I tried to mod the console to fix the bugs and make it a bit more working and faster, but my Mac didn't want to play with me on that regard so it was what I had in the box.

Somehow I feel that I can understand why people still play this version even though all the bugs and non-working things in it. It's just fun. Especially when I know a couple of things like Peninsula of Power, where to find the magical items and how to properly use some of the classes, like Monk where no weapons and armour is the way to go and what magic to go for. Still fighter, monk, black mage and white mage.

Now, using the save state function on the console elevates a lot of the stress if you play it as intended. Pause in dungeons, restart directly beside bosses to try if luck is with you the second time (used that for every encounter in the Ice Caverns) and skip the problem with the house bug where they save before replenishing spell charges so in the normal game you have to use another tent or cottage (houses cost 3000 gil so no) to save after healing up. Funny enough I actually changed class at level 19 and beat the game on level 28-29. Don't enjoy having to buy a single item at a time.

I can actually recommend playing as is if you want too. I know some mention the guide in the manual as a necessity, but I actually think the game does decent at explaining what to do and you hardly need maps (I used them to speed up everything, I guess I would have a bit higher level if I wandered around a bit more). And with that I only have the Wii Virtual Console left to play of these versions and that one doesn't have save states so I guess when I play that version that will be the most legit run I will do, and maybe Switch it up with a fighter, monk, red mage and white mage party.

So, recommended over other versions? I like the graphics, but I miss the cut scenes they added in later versions. A bit hard getting what happened after giving the TNT to the dwarf that blew up the canal. This also enforces my thought that 1/2 EXP on the Pixel Remaster would be the better option (would have to try since they changed the stats for Chaos and maybe making a low-level run around 30 levels makes it a bit harder). Would I play this version again? Maybe if I mod the console to get a working version with all the bugs and such just to experience it. It's not unplayable by any means, the player just have to change perspective for a much slower and more methodic combat. Especially when you use people to heal with the heal helmet and heal staff to save on the potions while the damage dealers just wreck havoc on the enemies.

Chrono Cross (Chrono Cross: The Radical Dreamers Edition) (Switch)

Through the Dimensions

Took me a while since I started it right after playing through the Radical Dreamers. And that post was published in 2023 and I assume I played it some months before that. It's a remake of a PS1 game from 1999 and a sequel to the SNES Chrono Trigger. Story is that the young boy Serge have dream of him, a girl and a puppy wandering through a fortress, he wakes up and has too collects items for his... I assume they hint at girlfriend... and he is transported through a dimensional portal. He ends up in the same world, albeit different. Like the fact that he was supposed to have died 14 years earlier drowning in the ocean. He gets the help of Kid, the girl that appeared in Radical Dreamers and he helps her to find the Frozen Flame in Viper Manor... this is basically the Radical Dreamers again. Lynx is also here as the main antagonist. After a lot of adventures you end up at the Fort Dragonia which is where the game started. And redoing the steps you face Lynx, Kid gets killed (?) and suddenly Lynx steals your body. You play as Lynx from this time on and tries to get into the Sea of Eden where the connections with Chrono Trigger becomes apparent. Shadows of Chrono, Lucca and Marle is there and the Bell in the town square. And the first boss I really has trouble with. To fix it I guess I had to go back to town, get red elemental magic to combine with and choose a team that adhere to that. I didn't so I got beaten up and in the end I quit for a time.

And a year or so later it hit me, all these remasters Square Enix put out have things that make this game easier right? Speed-up and boost right? So I got to it and what did they do? They made you invincible since the battle system doesn't work like Final Fantasy games where they just gives you constant special attacks. And here is probably best to describe the game mechanics. There is levels, and yet not. Defeating a boss gives you a star level and with it a stat boost that goes to all characters. In between the bosses you can fight say 5-10 enemies and get mini stat boosts, like HP and one of those gives you something better. After that you don't level up until the next boss. Meaning the challenge is constantly scaled. Which forces you to learn the magic system and such. And I'm bad at that. Maybe if the equipment side would compensate, but either I didn't get it, since I ended using the quick smithy thing and decked them out with that and nothing else seemed to come up, except the rainbow equipment, which I never got around to since I couldn't get the hammer the smith asked for.

And that isn't mentioning the most problematic thing about this game. It has 45 characters to play as... Jesus. And people complained that Final Fantasy VI had 16 characters. You see the problem here? If you only get those mini-level ups by fighting monsters? Do you need to use them all? Yeah, if you want to min-max yes but doesn't matter. But how can you keep all these characters separated? Especially hard since they actually have counterparts in the other dimension. So you are gonna confuse them. I prefer parties that have set characters for this reason, I might grow with them and feel for them. The only one that matters is Serge, and Kid, but she is killed half-way through. And in the end I just used Pascal the pirate and the alien guy, who for some reason is very important for the story since you need his UFO to get to Terra Tower where the Time Devourer awaits... and you fly there with a machine from the UFO installed on the sail boat. It's f***ing awesome!

I might not like the battle system and all the characters, but it was a bit of fun. Graphics are nice, music great and the story draws me in. First the question on where Serge ended up and then what happened at Fort Dragonia. Then getting to Chronopolis, a city pushed back 10 000 years from the future and Terra Tower, another city brought back 10 000 year. How the story begins claiming humans to be infestation on the Earth since they are "children of Lavos" compared to the Reptites and the dragons that are part of the Earth. Lynx is actually your father corrupted by FATE, the computer that... I don't remember, the story goes crazy here. Kid is actually the clone of Schala and so on. It's so convoluted I actually like it.

The problem though makes it hard for me to know where to go. Several points I ran back and fourth through all locations in order to figure out where to go, and I didn't use the no encounter button. Gets tedious, especially since you don't gain levels beyond the first points. Don't say no to money and items and such. Doesn't help that you might need the right character, do you have the item? So many variables that it makes it hard to get it for me. Coming back a year or so later made it rather hard to guess what all items I carried did, but at least I got it working to power through the end. Helped that all battles was made easy by being invincible. Still, found the final battle interesting since you have to use the Chrono Cross to get the good ending, and how do you use it? I got that since the chimes and colours that appears after getting it is important and that being seven means I have to use the different magics to create a pattern. But it only works on the end boss and I get that climbing the Terrra Tower tells you the pattern, and that the second to last boss uses that pattern himself. I got that since I looked it up before and could see that it was the pattern. The game is a bit obtuse is all I'm saying.

Still, I can't say I didn't like it. Maybe playing it in New Game+ works better, but this is a game that if you gotta 100% it you need a guide. Another complaint people have was that this game actually undoes everything you did in Chrono Trigger. That message was that you could change the future, every game over screen have that the future refused to change and in the end you did it, Lavos defeated and everyones happy. Well, not here. Lavos conjures a city back in time which forces the dragon gods to summon a reptilian city from the future and so on. What then do I think about it? Eh, in another dimension Chrono succeeded, this is more like a what if. They even hint that Radical Dreamers is an alternate dimension so why not the original Chrono? Like the third timeline in Zelda it might be one part where they die and so on. Really, the only time that bothers me would be if it goes in a boring direction. I can't say they went there. As said the story goes bonkers and I kinda like it. Can understand why not the whispered about third entry Chrono Break never got made cause where are you gonna go? Didn't think Xenoblade Chronicles 3 would tie in with the others, but they did. And I saw it floating around that they registered Chrono Break again so who knows.

Final Fantasy XV: Pocket Edition HD (Switch)

What it's supposed to look like

Well, more Final Fantasy and I pretty much only have one game left besides playing the original games again... and the sequels to XIII on the PS3... or the sequel to IV I got for the Wii, but ease of start and play is really better on the Switch. So it was XV the Pocket edition in HD. I don't have a Playstation 4 or 5 so this was the best way to play it. I read somewhere someone didn't know who this is for, like everyone got a phone that can play this or you got a Playstation. Well, apparently it's for me who don't want to play games on a phone and doesn't have a newer Playstation. So let's wait 5 years until I got around to it.

So basically, you play prince Noctis on his way to his wedding with the lady Lunafreya. With him he has three friends, Gladiolous the muscle, Ignis the smart guy and Prompto the wisecracking one. After getting their car fixed by Cid and Cindy news reach that the Empire have attacked their kingdom and killed Noctis father the king in order to get a ring and crystal. On their journey they bump into the empire's chancellor Ardyn that seems to help them for some reason. Suddenly we start to collecting summons that represents the six gods. I don't know if a lot got missed in the smaller Pocket Edition, but at times I just went with the motions cause I didn't quite get why I did everything.

That goes on until we get to this island republic under the empire's protection where Leviathan lives and Lunafreya is there as well to get the blessing. So after an action packed sequence the beloved are so close to reunite and then... Ardyn shows up and kills Lunafreya. And somehow Ignis got blinded. Some sad moments, the light of day is disappearing and daemons attack the civilians. Collecting the last things and entering the empire's capital to get the crystal they stole. And Ardyn reveals that he is actually immortal and a former king of Noctis kingdom, but he somehow was demonized and turned evil... as said, I don't always follow why things happen. Doesn't matter, Noctis enters the crystal and get Bahamut's blessing and suddenly it has gone 10 years. The world is overrun by daemons and only one city is left standing due to a power generator. Noctis meets up with his friends and they head out to get the throne back from Ardyn. After battling it turns into a one-on-one fight between Noctis and Ardyn. Noctis wins and then I guess he dies since he needed to sacrifice himself to return the light. Doesn't explain how he sits on the throne at the end with Lunafreya.

Story is passable, gameplay is interesting. You got three weapons to chose from, which I only used the normal sword since it was fast enough. I wonder if they were supposed to have weapon triangle system, but it doesn't seems to be working. You got magic... but you gotta pick it up from power sources and they are one use only. Better using the armitage system were the royal weapons are used for great attacks during a short time. It has a cool-down timer, but it works. Voice acting is good, the graphics are not up to the normal game, and looks a bit like Bravely Default, although they looked better there. There is one funny scene where someone is painting the gang and they use a really high-res picture of the group from the normal version where everyone laughs at how ridiculous it looks. That was kinda funny. Other graphical things people talked about was the food it was life-like, no such thing here. Would have been fun with just a still image of the food. Also, no need to save treasures as all they are for are selling for cash. I got that you used to use it upgrade your weapons, but they simplified it with just being able to buy the things. Fine by me. Also the reason for the magic system is that you needed items so they used the power sources instead.

Overall, if you can't play it in a normal way it works. Rumours of Switch 2 is high and I would probably get the normal version if they got it as well.

Update 2025-05-28: Well, now the Switch 2 is just one week away and sign of Final Fantasy XV.

Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII - Reunion (Switch)

To the promised land

So as of writing everyone else is playing and talking about Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth which made me get some cravings to return to that world, but since I don't have a Playstation 5 or a decent computer I had to go to the only option left without replaying the original game, and that is playing the remake of the PSP prequel that I have had on a shelf for 2 years.

So that's what I did. It starts like the original Final Fantasy VII, on a train inbound to a Mako reactor and a soldier jumping of at the station fighting Shrinra soldiers. In this game you play as Zack Fair, the guy Cloud impersonated in the original game and Aeriths boyfriend to be. It's a simulation of a Wutai attack where they have taken uniforms from Shinra and you are supposed to stop them before they blow up the reactor. Here you meet your instructor Angeal. The training is cut short when Zack gets beaten up by Sephiroth. Then it's off to Wutai as the war is still going on and you encounter Yuffie before fighting the boss, but afterwards Angeal disappears. And then you are sent out to look into his hometown with the Turk leader Tseng that Sephiroth kills in the temple with the black materia. There it is revealed that Angeal and another of the super SOLDIERS Genesis came from the same village and that Genesis have, for some reason sprouted wings like Sephiroth in his final form.

After that it gets to stop several attacks by Genesis that works with a scientist called Hollander that wants revenge when Hojo took his promotion so to speak. It culminates with Zack killing Angeal and capturing Hollander, who is rescued by what it seems to be the director of SOLDIER that have been financing Hollander. For revenge it is stated, but revenge for what isn't really stated I get, unless I missed it by not playing through all missions (I stopped at around 50%). Meanwhile Zack met Aerith and Cloud and after giving Aerith the idea to sell flowers Cload and Zack heds for Nibelheim and pretty much reenacts that parts of the Final Fantasy VII story, but without Cloud being centre stage. Sephiroth goes insane, burns down the village and Cloud is the one that finally offs him from the reactor. Zack and Cloud gets captured by Hojo that experiments on them, Zack escapes and brings Cloud with them, They get help from one of Zacks friends in the Turks, a girl I haven't seen before. After a run around Zack faces of Genesis in the bombed out village Angeal and him came from so defeating him it pretty much returns to what I known before. They reach the outskirts of Midgar, but the Shinra army catches up with them. Zack makes a last stand killing them all, but dies from his wounds, giving the buster sword to Cloud. And it ends with Aerith selling her flowers and a train pulling up near the Mako reactor with Cloud atop it. The game bookending it self and straight up tells us that the story continues in Final Fantasy VII.

Gameplay wise it's more of an action RPG. You equip up to three accessories and six materia that gives you different attacks and enhances stats or effects. Like the original the materia levels up, but I assume it's random like the normal level ups. You have a three wheeled spinner that constantly spin and if you get 777 you get a level up, I think 444 is materia level up. At times you can get three characters and it will give you a special attack and might trigger a summon that also have to align on the wheel. Sceptical in the beginning, but as soon I learned that the level ups isn't completely random (the more monster you kills, the higher a hidden EXP value goes and the possibility for a guaranteed 777 goes up). Feels a lot better than a certain game that also talked about randomness in their level ups.

Overall, I found it enjoyable. The music when they hint at the original songs are great, it's fun seeing locals and people you recognise from the original game, but I quickly realised that people I didn't recognised would probably die. Imagine my surprise that the girl Turk seemed to survive. When I got used to the gameplay it was rather ok. Would have preferred more JRPG elements to be honest, and I expected at least one more materia slot. Never got the idea around materia combining so never bothered. Only took me something like 30 hours and the game ends on a new game+ save so I can replay it with levels and most equipment intact. I guess I have to redo all the missions, but since I was level 50 and with some mastered materia it would be a piece of cake to get back, if a bit tiresome at some enemies. Got craving to play the remakes of Final Fantasy VII, hopefully they release them for the Switch 2 or something (unless it's a freaking cloud version).

Update 2025-04-28: And my prayer's were answered, but the monkey's paw curled its finger with the invention of Game Key Cards. At least it isn't a cloud version, right?

Dragon Quest Monster: The Dark Prince (Switch)

Missed opportunity to not have the one-eyed monster behind the age rating.

Continued with the Dragon Quest games and it was part of the Dragon Quest Monster spin-off series. I haven't played the other games in this particular series. It's a side-story for the 4th game in the main series and chronicles the story of Psaro the Manslayer, the main bad guy from that game. It starts with him as a kid as the second son to Randolfo the Tyrant and his human mother dying. He gets too Nadiria to get help to his mother, but Randolfo instead curses him to not be able to hurt monsters, but Psaro is saved by the Zenithian dragon that tells him that his mother has died. Psaro returns to the world and is told by dwarfs how to wrangle monsters so that they can help him fight other monsters since he himself couldn't do it. After entering a tournament he meets Rose, the elven girl who cries ruby tears and saves her from the slavers. And together they set out to be the very best, like no ones ever known.

They travel across the lands of Nadiria and meet Toilen Trouble, a human pickpocket that joins you. You also gets help from an unknown master that push you on. The different circles lead to different stories, like the fire circle tells the story of the Brimstone Boys as they are trying to resurrect a fire bird god from the volcano that you gotta stop, the futuresque city tells of Sir Percival that stood guard outside Rose's tower that you first beat up and then help depose of the mad king sitting at the top. And at times we shift back to the main story of the main game. You watch the destruction of the Chosen's village at the hands of Dolph the Destroyer, your older brother, the kidnapping of Rose and the awakening of Estark. The kidnapping shows the bad ending where you plays out the original ending of the main game where the Chosen cuts of your every limb and you become more and more gruesome. It is undone by Toilen having stolen the Sands of Time and brings you back to the moment where the choice was finding the real Rose after the kidnapping. It also tells us that the master behind you, Aamon was the one behind the kidnapping and this tells the story from the main game when Aamon lured Psaro into the war with humankind... and incidentally become the main bad guy in the post-game content for the DS version of the game.

With all that Psaro challenges his father after the Chosen helped defeating Dolph. An intense battle as my main team fell one by one, except my trusty Dark Slime Boomph which I had dumped a lot of seeds on. Using my healing herbs I held him alive until he did the final strike and felled Randolfo the Tyrant. Psaro don't take the throne and leaves. The gang is picked up by the Zenithian Dragon that returns them home. Credits roll. The game continues in the post-game with the third Estark demon that hides in Whisper Wood so you go there with the youngest brother Ludo. I didn't beat him so I quit the game for now.

Overall a fun game. It's basically Pokemon, but you gotta breed them to better and better versions. I don't like the amount of choices you had and it was just flukes that made me realize that the Dark Slimes breath attack actually hurts (and kills) Liquid Metal Slimes in one attack so I began farming that to keep my main team somewhere around 40-70, wish I had upgraded the healer slime I used to get Omniheal a lot sooner. So basically brute forced my way through it. I got that a higher grade meant better monsters, and a bred monster is better than a caught one due to getting more skill points. But hey, it's finished. Small nitpicks is like why can't I sort the bestiary after new entries? It annoys me that they show there is, but you have to manually look through the damn book over and over since the red dot can meld into the monsters.

Dragon Quest Treasure (Switch)

While writing this it's Monday after the news broke that Akira Toriyama had passed away so I obviously went into some kind of Dragon Quest mode. I thought of replaying XI again, but in 2D the whole way, but I didn't feel for putting in another 100 hours. I got Dragon Quest Monster for the Switch, but then I recalled I had Dragon Quest Treasure which I started when I got it back in 2022, but dropped off after something like 17 hours into the game. So 5 hours later I was finished with the main quest and could call it quits.

Story is a prequel to XI where Erik (the thief from XI) and his sister Mia as kids rescues some strange animals the pirate vikings captured, a flying pig and a flying cat. They show them an island where two daggers exist, the siblings take one dagger each and with it they can understand the creatures that wants the siblings help in order to find the 7 stones so that they can be un-cursed by the gods and return to heaven.

So you begin by finding an abandoned train station that you fix and with the train it take you to the railway headquarters in the middle between the floating islands. You name your island and I chose Plutonia like the song from Albert Bouchards album Imaginos II. Then it's off finding treasures, fight monster, recruit monsters, restore more train stations and find more islands to travel to in search of the seven treasures of the old dragons. There's gangs of treasure hunters fighting you at every turn, big monsters, deep dungeons and an evil pirate captain that stand in your ways. And the treasure you find is all connected to the history of Dragon Quest, either items from the games, characters from the game or things like playing cards from our world.

It was a fun game really, more hack'n'slash than an rpg, but it works. Still, after getting 4 of the main treasures I just tuned out. The grind got to me. Going place to place wouldn't be so bad if you didn't constantly got a warning after a set amount of time about another rival gang that you either have to fight off or get back to the base so that you can dump your treasures into the vault. But that still isn't enough since then your base can be attacked so you have to fight off the invaders. I just want to explore the islands and take my time! So I probably got a bit burned out. So two years later I just went straight for the final quests to get the 3 remaining treasures and then fought off the pirate captain and watched the credits and then started up the post game and just saved before calling it quits.

It was kinda sad seeing the credits since not only had Toriyama passed away, but this was apparently the last game that the composer Koichi Sugiyama worked on as well. No in memory off in the credits if I didn't miss it. Maybe that is saved for Dragon Quest XII or the remake of Dragon Quest III. A fun distraction and only took me 22 hours as a whole to finish, not 100 %, but I can't be bothered with that. Other games to play.

Nier: Automata - The End of YoRHa Edition (Ending A) (Switch)

Does Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?

Picked up Nier: Automata at a sale at the beginning of 2024 and started to play through it. Only heard good things about it and it is made by Platinum Games that made Wonderful 101 and the Bayonetta-series and published by Square Enix. I gathered it's a sequel to a game that is a spinoff to another series, but I've never played any of them. Oh yeah and of course I know the main character 2B from all the p... you know what, maybe I've written too much?

Anyway, the game begins by telling us that mankind have been driven from earth by aliens that built robots attacking them. Mankind have settled on the moon and uses androids to fight their battles to reclaim the earth. The opening begin with our hero 2B on an inflight mission to fight a goliath with several other androids in shells (like in Xenoblade Chronicles X, still want a port and continuation of that game [this of course was written long before they announced the port to Switch]), but one by one they get offed by the robots. She is the only one that survives the raid and as she begins fighting the goliath she is supported by 9S, a scout android compared to her battle android. They defeat the goliath but three more appears so they use their black boxes to create an explosion that take them all out, including 9S and 2B.

And here they show a bit about the gameplay. If you die, you are generated back into a new body (the same as the old one), and we're back in the bunker. So in story, the androids loses their self and return constantly missing information (technically only when the story demands is since I very much remember what happens until the death) and relearning their bonds with their peers. In this case 2B and 9S. Anyway, they are sent back to recon and help the resistance on earth. They explore and fights robots, in the desert they see a robot... orgy is probably the closest word I can use for what I saw as I lie here in a fetal position. There the robots create a robot that looks like an android that names himself Adam. You fight him, but has to retreat since he is too strong.

Then you fight a robot at an amusement park that looks like an opera singer that captured several YoRHa members. You defeat it and then are helped by a robot named Pascal that leads a village where robots have decoupled from the network that rule the robots. From here I got a feeling it was go here, do that until you are supposed to protect a missile convoy that allows you to again fly in shell, you fight it but has to use one of the cannons to destroy a Godzilla like monster, 9S disappears after the battle so you look for him and find a replica city where you confront Adam again (you already meet again while investigating an alien ship below ground that resurfaced where the aliens where dead, apparently killed by Adam and his brother Eve) that have kidnapped 9S and put him on a cross. You kill Adam and return 9S to the bunker. You are tasked by command to investigate strange behaviour from the robots and joins Pascal as she is on her way to colony of robots in the factory. There the robots seemed to have form a cult and you are taken to their leader that seems to have died so the robots begin killing themselves and tries to take you out as well. You escape with the help of 9S that hacked into the network from the bunker.

Back outside you head to the resistance camp where the robots have gone berserk and began eating the androids. Afterwards a huge boss appears outside the camp which you fight and 9S joins you by crashing a shell into it and then Eve appears from it completely deranged after the loss of his brother. You thwart an attack on Pascal's village and then take the fight to Eve where 9S hack into the network again to severe Eve's connection to the network. After he is killed 9S reveal that he is infected so 2B has to strangle him to stop the corruption from being uploaded to the Bunker. She is about to destroy every single robot, but all the heads of the robots begin activating, a giant robot comes up from the ground and it is 9S who was saved in the robot network. The end?

Well, the credits roll at least. The game afterwards shows a message from the PR team that this is one ending of several and recommended to continue playing. Don't know what to think about it really. I played it on normal and the difficulty was rather descent. The harder modes where you had no lock-in function and could only take one hit seemed a bit too hard for me. Although, I felt at times I was just pushing buttons and 2B dodged hits here and there and the pods did the most damage (which makes the loss of Lock-on targeting seem like a very bad thing to lose). The chip-upgrade function I never learned so used automatic for all three (balanced, attack and defence) and used mostly Attack and Defence depending if the extra health or attack was important. The game crashed on me once, 16 hours in and after stopping the attack on Pascal's village so I had to redo the Eve fight before that since I saved just before going out to that fight (thank god for that). I might think not closing the software for that amount might have been the thing that did me in.

That was the gameplay part. It's fun playing it, but I find the environments rather boring, abandoned factory and a desert being the first part and then pretty much city ruins. Not until the forest area we get some colours back. And then the game get to the end game with the missile convoy. Also, there is basically only 4-5 enemies types as well that just gets stronger. Music's fine and it is rather interesting themes like what makes one human. Sometimes the robots seems more human than the androids even though they are supposed to be made by the aliens. Cause there is some unanswered questions in ending A. You have A2, an android deserter from YoRHa that killed the forest king of the robots and just bailed which seems to have a history with the resistance leader. Also, are the androids really made by mankind? I mean, the robots like Emil sounds like they where humans first so maybe it's that the Aliens used humans for their robots, but that has to be another playthrough I guess. And the YoRHA motto of "Glory to Mankind"? Sounds awfully facist if you ask me, so what does this mean? Is there humans or are they as dead as the aliens? Are we gonna go for a Xenoblade Chronicles X twist that the androids are the actual humans? The more I think about it, the more I feel like they are similar in so many ways, that the differences are irritating, and then X is the winner in better gameplay. For example, if I see the mountain, I could climb it in X, I just needed to find the right angle. In Nier, it is hard to know if I can jump to that platform since I'm invisible walled off from reaching it. But sometimes I'm supposed to do so since it's of the map... I really like X alright!

Super Mario RPG (Switch)

Clash of the Gaming Titans!

Yet another remake, this time of a Super Nintendo game, the very first Mario RPG, made by Square (now Square Enix). Originally not released in Europe until it was one of the first special Wii Virtual Console releases during a certain Japanese holiday and cost a bit more than the usual releases. I got it there and then they released it for the SNES Mini as well. Never finished either version. Only tried it on the Wii Virtual Console, but I fell asleep somewhere after the bow boss. Should probably finish it some day to see the differences from this game.

Story is that Bowser have kidnapped Princess Peach, but as Mario beats Bowser in his castle a gian sword falls from the sky and throws Mario, Bowser and Peach in different directions. Apparently the sword was sent by Smithy from Weapons land as he intends to take over the world. So Mario begins the rescue of the whole world.

First he meets Mallow a cloud boy that says he is a frog. He had a run in with a pick-pocket so you help him and you go back to his father, the frog sage that tells him that he really is adopted since the sage found him in the river so he took care of him. You also meets up with a living doll called Geno that have been possessed by a star entity to find the seven stars to restore the star road (that was smashed by the sword crashing down) so that wishes can be granted again.

I played to much D&D when this is what I think of as star entities.

You also recruit Bowser and Peach in order to stop this existential threat to the Mushroom kingdom and all others. You fight underwater shark pirates, climb to the clouds and fight off a usurper to the throne that belongs to Mallow, you traverse Star hill, fight some dwarf in a tower that tries to marry Peach and so on until you fight off Smithy in his weapon factory. Beat him and you win, a parade is shown and everyone lives happily again.

It was a fun adventure. The changes made the game go a lot faster. For one, if you time your attacks right you get an area of effect that damage all enemies and that greatly speed up the game. I think that was what broke me last time, that I had to fight every individual enemy in a fight. You also can gather energy to a super attack with all three players in your party either do some buff or healing effect or do decent damage. Otherwise it's seems to be just graphics and music that is changed. Also they added cutscenes that was a bit more cinematic than the in-game cutscenes from the original. Interesting choice not to have any voice acting. You are able to play some post-game stuff and finish up unfinished quests, like what's behind the locked door in Monstro Town... OH NO!!!

I haven't been fooled like this since Final Fantasy V and the damn treasure chest!

Overall, I found it most enjoyable. Finally finished it for the first time. Really looking forward to the Thousand Year Door remake in 2024. Why I mention this is that the Paper Mario was the sequels to this game Nintendo made themselves and you can feel that the first Paper Mario really took a lot of the story like the seven stars and star road and incorporated it into that game. Due to the first Paper Mario being on the Switch as N64-game I have a hard time seeing that being remade. All I'm saying I got a craving for more Paper Mario. (This was of course played well before the announcement of Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door Remake)

Star Ocean 2: The Second Story R (Switch)

SPACE!

Got the sequel to the game Star Ocean I played something like 3-5 years ago. That one was a remaster of a PSP remake of a SNES game. This one is apparently a remake of a PS1 game. So first choice is choosing between Claude C. Kenny or Rena Lanford. I choose Claude first since he was a melee fighter. We begin in space as the space ship Calnus is investigating a planet where they found an energy signal, but the planet is abandoned. The landing party has the Admiral Ronyx J. Kenny (one of the heroes of the first game) and Claude C. Kenny. Claude gets too close to a machine that teleports him to another part of the galaxy where he lands in a forest and rescues a woman named Rena Lanford on the planet Expel. She mistakes him for the Hero of Light that with his sword of light is gonna rescue the world.

Apparently the world is having an increase in monsters and earthquakes the last 3 months since the Sorcery Globe landed on the continent of Ell. Rena was kidnapped by a suitor under the control of a stone that seems to be linked to the Globe so Claude rescue her and both of them set out to solve the mystery of the globe. On their travels they meet the wizard Selene, the unlucky warrior Ashton that is cursed with two dragon heads, the inventor Presis, the... student (?) Welch, the kid genius Leon and the zoologist Noel... I find it rather fun that the characters Leon and Noel is the names backwards.

After travelling across two continents the gang arrive at Ell and finds a tower. Climbing it Claude finally is contacted by the Calnus that beams him up. He wants to go back, but an alarm sounds as the planet is drifting toward an energy wave that is about to pass by. Claude asks to say goodbye to his friends and back in the tower he drops his communicator and continues up the tower. There they meet the Ten Wise Men, ten individuals that seemed to be trapped in the globe and are using it now to enter the energy field in order to return to their home. Your team is dragged into the energy and find yourself on the planet Energy Nede after destroying Expel. Here you learn that the Wise Men was genetically engineered people to rule the galaxy, but defeated 100 million years ago they were trapped in space until this moment though. You get help in order to prepare against the battle and charges the Wise Men. In the confrontation they use a weapon to rule the galaxy that destroys the Calnus that hovers over the energy cloud, seemingly killing everyone aboard, including Ronyx.

Enraged Claude climbs this tower as well killing all the Wise Men, but the last one, Gabriel are preparing the Symbol of Annihilation in order to destroy the universe since he can't rule it for himself. But our heroes uses a symbol of their own that redirects the power toward Energy Nede and they are transported back to Expel as it is brought back together with its people. Endings dependent on your relationships status between characters, no hint if the Calnus was brought back as well (but I found a reference that the writer let it be up to the players to decide... so of course it came back, they didn't do anything wrong).

Overall, I liked it better than the first game. Didn't get destroyed in battles so either I'm better or I actually understood the level ups and stats progressions on the skills. 40 hours of gameplay and then it allows you to replay it again on a New Game+. Fun to start over with over 100 levels. The graphics are really nice, especially liked the water effects. And lastly, the music is made my Motoi Sakurabi, you know, the Golden Sun-composer! How can it be bad? But I start to hear the similarities between Tales of-games and this soundtrack, but you gotta love the prog synth in the dungeons.

Final Fantasy VI (Pixel Remaster) (Switch)

Highest Acclaimed Game!

The last game in the Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster pack, and this one was hard to play through (not only by being the longest game, but since I probably entered Final Fantasy fatigue as well as it was just a year ago since I played it last on the PSOne). 33 hours compared to V:s 25 hours and the others something like 10-15 hours. Still the fastest I finished the game compared to the 60 hours last time, and every level above 80. The boost option works really great and even allowed me to get pretty much every magic except Meltdown to every character. Which might have added to the fatigue by make the micromanagement of the level grind kinda irritating. If you don't know, you don't raise stats by normal level ups unless you equip an esper that grants one, and that is at highest +2. So, best strategy is running through the first part to get to Ramuh and get the first esper and finish the magitek factory and then equip specific esper before every level up. Kid me didn't understand that, but I do now and boy, is it fun to get several characters with magic 100 or strength 100, enemies don't stand a chance.

Did they change things? Yes, several parts in fact. The most talked about is the opera scene, actual singing vocals and instead of 2d they soar around the scene like it was a 2d-hd engine and that is only for that scene. They changed the mine-cart scene so I actually see what it is (unfortunately it doesn't give the same effect of car sickness looking at it and they slowed it down). Celes doesn't get punched in her introductory scene and some changes here and there to the script. Changes to enemy encounters at places, drops and so on. Mostly fixed things that was bugged out in the original (which they fixed in every release afterwards what I know). They also added motor sound to the airships and Deathgaze is no longer invisible on the map, but still a pain to find, but at least I can see him. And they changed the fish to Cid mini-game, I didn't even try and he got better, and I wanted the downer ending with the jump from the cliff!

Still a hard game though. I got beaten up by bosses I have not had trouble with before (or that be due to the change of grinding meaning I had lower levels at times which would help immensely in the end game, just need to get there). And most of them you can't just cue up the same attack patterns and just get a sandwich as the auto-battle plays out, no, here you have to carefully choose your attacks, otherwise the bosses will walk all over you, but I'm glad I can speed up the slow ATB-meter.

Now, the usual final question, which version to play? I don't need to play the PSOne-version ever again. GBA has some extra espers and an extra dungeon (which I haven't played through if I recall, it has the Kaiser Dragon in the Dragon's Den). Someone on youtube mentioned that they believe that all bonus will come as DLC and I almost hope so I can retire my GBA collection since I need more space in the bookcase. But there is problems here, at the 15 hours the game crashed and there is stuttering in the scrolling while walking around towns. I thought the game would crash more, right after finishing the game an update arrived as well.

And with this I finished the whole Pixel Remaster. I wish the Dragon Quest games would have gotten this treatment as well, but since they are working on a Dragon Quest III remake in the 2d-HD engine I have to wait for that (and they hinted about doing I and II as well). FF III the most interesting game in the collection and all is very nice, just missing the extra content from GBA releases.

Final Fantasy V (Pixel Remaster) (Switch)

Now we enter the ones that I only played one year ago (as of writing) and I gotta be honest, this is still a fun game to play and due to the different ways to play there is a new way to play every time. And this version speeds up the end game a lot. I spent 5-6 hours at first chance in Bal Castle and just grinded out the Object d'art until I got every job mastered, meaning I could just focus on arming up the characters with double weapons with highest damage output. I still have to be strategic with bosses and environments since most bosses have something that stops them from being hacked to death, be it several enemies that auto-regenerate or something like that. Graphically I also noticed that some backgrounds in battles had moving parts like waterfalls flowing down. First time I noticed this in these game, don't know if it's due to being the first game that they did that or if I didn't look at the backgrounds in the other games.

Of course, I played the EXP and Gil counter on normal and the ABP on 4x and it wasn't a problem and before I grinded it out I actually tried different job combinations (with getting Blue Mage Learn ability first for all characters to make that easier). The game still played fine and had a decent challenge. Noticed though that the end game stops giving you EXP when you enter the final area... of course I grinded out to level 50 in order to get the super bosses this time around and I crushed Omega and Shinryu for the first time. I got two badges for that... a bit anticlimactic, but Shinryu also had Ragnarok hidden in that stupid chest he hid in. Damn cheater. They also had a lot of mentioning of Hell in this version.

I also think the end credits is also the first that have a background beyond a black screen. I wonder if it's due to the actual one having something compared to the earlier entries. At least make it interesting to watch... and makes me wonder about the end theme since there is a lot more credited people in these rereleases compared to the original. Playing it so close also reminded me about things I missed like the summon near the lake in the second world and actually using beastmaster abilities in order to get some of the blue mage spells. I also started with the intention of getting every bestiary, but I somehow missed the Hydra in the Ronka Ruins so I gave up that. Same place actually gave me a reason to use 0.5x and 0 EXP to get some abilities like lvl 4 Gravity and so on.

So, same question like the others, which is the preferred version? I finished the PSOne version and have no need to play that version again, this version is fun enough and the ease of play works fine. Discovered a glitch or something since I was in mirage tower and suddenly the game froze on me trying to open the menu so I had to close the software. Don't know the reason and that was the first time I got that. Could be that I played over 15 hours without closing the software, but that's just a guess. GBA? Still have the extra stuff like more jobs and a post-endgame dungeon that allows you to fight the big bad from 1 000 years ago that forced the heroes of that time to split the crystals and create the two worlds in order to seal the void that Exdeath was after. Since being level 50 and out-grinded on jobs made me defeat the super-bosses without problem it might actually be needing something more.

Final Fantasy IV (Pixel Remaster) (Switch)

The Warrior Within!

Another ones bite the dust. Fourth game and it seems the fourth time I've finished the game. This is actually the first time I see they enhanced the cutscenes beyond mere upgrading the sprites. First noticed when Rydia burns away the ice and instead of a flame going through the obvious grid it actually melts the whole ice. And then when Leviathan attacks the ship it looks animated. I also discovered some things I didn't get from the original. For example, I've never used the bow and arrows since I found it cumbersome to keep track on the amount of arrows, but turns out that it's the best weapon for Rosa since it allows her to sit in the back and just deal a lot of damage. Helps a lot that they apparently changed it so you only need one arrow and not stock up on them. This and the 3D version used that while all other have the need to stock up on supplies. Another thing that used to bother me was that the monks looked like quarterbacks in American football with helmets and such, wasn't until this playthrough I got that it was marks like Aang in the Last Airbender on their heads. Makes sense now.

Another change is that they got rid of the developer room. It was nothing more than a fourth-wall breaking area where the devs put themselves in and you can interact and fight some of them. I found it rather fun first time finding it since it felt like a secret. But they got rid of it since they had to ask every person involved in the original and some things I get wasn't as PC today to say. Then again, you still have the dancing scenes with the showgirls.

I played it with 4x EXP and Gil meaning I probably had the same level as when I grinded like hell for the GBA version since I knew some hard parts of the game (the dwarven castle boss fight the worst since it was two boss fights in a row). Of course, was it a walk in the park? No, this game reminds me why I hated the sylph cave with the damn malboros and toads. I find it even more funny that due to equipments and such I gather you are supposed to do that one before the land of summons, but it's just more easy to do that first meaning some equipments are just useless.

So, which version to play? Ease of play this one wins without a problem, although the auto-battle mechanic is a bit of a bother since at times you have to adjust more often than in earlier games and since I can't see what attacks they are auto-ed to compared to the earlier games it can be a bit bothersome. The DS have the 3D graphics and some extra story with Golbez and voice acting (but the 2D versions wins out there since you can hear the awesome music instead of someone talking over it) while the GBA have the changing character mechanic and extra dungeons. PSOne is obviously the loser in any of these beside the cutscenes before and after the game... which I probably should finish one day to just tick it off.

Final Fantasy III (Pixel Remaster) (Switch)

Pretty much the jobs I used.

Third game and pretty much the most interesting of all these games since it's actually the first time we got the 2D version in Europe or US. I of course have the DS-version (two of them as well to one day fix the locked behind social connection dungeons and weapons) and I enjoyed that for what it was. Of course this version doesn't have Luneth, Arc, Refia or Ignus and the tied in story beats for these characters so I just reused Niklas, Aang, Tara and Imaginos. And used fighter, monk, white and black mage for the starter. It gave you access to the jobs much faster since you get it in the starting cave while on the DS you had to defeat the Djinn first and uncurse everyone. Monk seemed to be the master stroke since damage output is phenomenal together with Black Belt made Aang MVP yet again.

Having knowledge about what's gonna happen helped a lot.. or it would have if I hadn't forgotten the mini sequence early on. Didn't matter much this time around since they got rid of the adjustment period and I played this version legit. No boost in EXP or Gil (except EXP boost between level 3 and 4 since I tried out if it affected the job level up, didn't look that way so I quit that). In other cases, I kept Aang as a monk to level 99 and then a Black belt to level 99 and then a knight until I got the ninja class, occasional black mage during mini sequences. Tara white mage till 99 and then viking (which was rather good since the high defence allowed me to just attack with her) and then devout and sage when that came up. Used more potions for healing to get around that I didn't have a healer in the party. Imaginos a Black mage till level 99 and then a geomancer and then a Magus and then a sage for the end game. Geomancer worked rather good for the dividing enemies so I could handle that part of the game with just one dark knight. Niklas had to change the most. First fighter, then red mage, thief, scholar and then I stuck with dragoon as soon I got that until I got a dark blade after the Geruda fight so I could switch to dark knight which I held until the ninja class was found.

I played it a bit slower as well. Instead of rushing to place to place I took a tour around the islands on boat and under water as well which probably helped with levels. I ended up with level 53 after almost 15 hours of play. And I finished the game that way. I assume they nerfed the end encounter a bit since I recall I had to grind to level 70-80 to get over 5000 hp to stand a chance against the particle beam, but it was nerve wracking fighting 6 boss battles in a row. I don't know if the crystals healed you in the DS, but thank god for that this time, plus I probably would have been ok with the auto-save feature sending me back so I could grind around a crystal if need be.

So... DS or Switch? Not gonna lie, the simpler version and auto-battle features are pretty nice... but there is the extra things in the DS version, a secret dungeon, extra sidequest and the ultimate black smith that rewards you for grinding jobs to 99. That is enticing (if it wasn't locked behind the damn mognet feature). And the small story bits with the named characters are better, since in the Pixel Remaster, there is pretty much only one character, Niklas who was character number 1 and got every connection with the other characters. In the DS version Luneth got Aria, Arc got prince Aura, Ignus got Sarah and Refia at least had her adoptive blacksmith father. It wasn't much, but it was something. At least there isn't any GBA or PSOne version.

Final Fantasy II (Pixel Remaster) (Switch)

Continued with the second game, the black sheep of the original games. Still find the story rather interesting, the gameplay... felt worse somehow. I just boosted everything, HP goes up after an amount of battles, easier to grind abilities and stats, they don't do negative growths, but... was the encounter rate always this high? Same problem with money in that everything was so expensive, but the ability to stop encounters make it palpable. They also seem to have added extra musical tracks since it doesn't correspond to the Famicom track list, but that might have been since any rerelease. I would also say, one thing to have made the whole forcing you to grind every single person more easy would have been to do it like in Grandia, you get an orb with the experience to give to a new character (to speed them up as actual replacements) or give it to one of the remaining players to specialise them in magic or weapons.

Still, no extra content with the dead characters which is a pity since this version I might have geared them out just fine and been able to grind their stats a bit. For example, in every pixel remaster you can just press Y in combat and the game goes into auto-battle doing the same actions the character did last time meaning it's perfect for this game where you had to use every spell or attack to get good at it. Getting Esuna up? Just spam it for a character and it will go up in no time. I noticed though that the weapon levels seemed a bit... strange, they hardly went up except after some bosses if I used it, did they limit it or something? Or was it always like that, but adding a fast grinding ability didn't make it work? Also, seems to a something like 10 levels for spells (I got cure up to 15 and the enemy highest seemed to be 16).

PSOne, GBA or Switch? PSOne has the cutscenes and that's it. Probably finish it sometime to get it over with. But GBA has that extra mode with Scott, Minwu, Joseph and Richard. And they are likeable characters so I feel inclined that one day I should probably play through the version legit and make sure I don't shaft them on the gear side like I done every other playthrough (penny pinching is real if everything cost this much, that's why Minwu didn't get any mithril gear... on the other hand the switch version seemed to give me the former party members gear so maybe I've just been an idiot all these years).

Update 2024-11-05: Well, I tried playing the Origins version and guess what? If you try to use warp points, the game freezes on me if playing on the PS3. Apparently it also can freeze if you try revive party members in the church and crossing a bridge after getting the sun flame trying to play the cutscene off Hilda getting overtaken by the Dreadnought. So my game is unplayable as of the moment. That sucks! At least it confirms it's last place status.

Final Fantasy I (Pixel Remaster) (Switch)

Where it all started!

Finally got the Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster for the Switch. Ordered it from Playasia back in April before the release and it came 20 June of 2023. Perfect timing for my vacation that started 2 days later. So this is the latest release of the original Final Fantasy-games and that means I can play I-X, XII and XV all on my Switch. Played the first game recently back in 2018 when I just had moved in my apartment and that was the GBA-version.

Took me something over 10 hours to play through, of course I used some Quality of life improvements, I gave myself 4x Gil and after getting the class upgrade I even gave myself 4x EXP. This at least showed me how the game is balanced. I didn't grind or anything until the class change and it happened around level 33 like my old playthrough, but I found out that the limiting factor in the game wasn't my levels, but my lack of resources to get weapons, items and magic. Probably should avoid getting some spells in future playthroughs since I don't use any of the status effect spells, save the gil for armour instead. I also changed my team so that is was Niklas the fighter, Aang the monk, Tara the white mage and Imaginos the black mage. Aang probably the MVP of the group with that damage output. He is a bit squishy though and bit the dust once, but in the end I find the monk class probably the one to keep.

So, is it the definitive version? Graphically and musically yes, especially when you can toggle the old and new music (some songs are just a bit better if they are scaled back, but choruses are always appreciated). Probably beating out the PSOne version since the only thing that version has is the cutscenes... so I might actually playthrough that version after finish of this collection. But the GBA? It has more stuff, although ease of play is rather important, but since it's a GBA I can save anywhere and it's portable if I want that plus with the Retron-5 I can play it on the TV. On the other hand, I got a bestiary and music player with the music, a gallery with concepts art as well as constant running and taking away encounter making the game play so much faster or just quickly check if I forgot something which the map helps with since you can see how many items and treasure chest there is in any town or dungeon. I assume I will get this problem for every game. Well, maybe not the original version I have for Wii Virtual Console or the NES Mini... but then again, listening to the Final Fantasy Retrospective makes you appreciate the original graphics and the way they used the limits of the original console for example to create white mountains and with the scan lines of the old TV:s make them out of crystals instead of the boring grey mountains we have now... I hope I don't get so into these games that I play those as well.

Octopath Traveler II (Switch)

Got the sequel to Octopath Traveler and finished it in 98 hours time.  Great, then I'm all set for Zelda in a month as of writing. Like its predecessor it was a great game. Much improved actually so that I did finish it this time around... I still adhere to finishing the main game, you can't have the final boss be behind side-quests that don't seems to be leading to a finale.

So the story like last time is that eight different travellers sets out for different reasons, ends up together and ends up stopping an evil lord of darkness. The first is Ochette, the beastling huntress from a tropical island. She is bestowed by her tribes guardian lion a spirit animal, either a fox or an owl that she will train with. I choose the owl. But all is not well as humans are expanding on the island and begins pushing the beastlings away, but one day a human child disappears and as the greatest hunter she follows it to some ancient ruins, but a monster appears that the guardian beast and Ochette defeats, but its arrival heralds the Crimson Moon and the dark forces that will overrun the island (and I presume the world) if Ochette can't find the three guardian beasts. She sets out alone, first looking for a water spirit, but that one had been killed by the dark hunter and plundered by humans. All that is left is an egg that finally hatches and the newborn follows Ochette. The second spirit is the sleeping fire beast Terra that fought a dark hunter to a stand still several years ago and now sleeps beneath a town as it slumbers stirs earthquakes around the town. The final one was the ice-bird Glacia that wreck havoc on a sacred mountain as her eggs was destroyed by the dark hunter. After calming all spirits she returns home and together with the beastlings and the guardian beast fight of the Crimson Moon and the monster they unleash, ending in a great battle with the corrupted fox from the beginning. After that the beastlings and humans makes peace and Ochette sets out again to find the dark hunter.

Out on the sea Cassti Florenz, an apothecary is rescued by a ship but have suffered amnesia. At the first town a string of sick people lead her to investigate the water supply that have been contaminated by a creature emitting poison. After rescuing the town the hostile people opens up to her. Her clothing ties her to a group called Eir's Apothecaries that seemingly poisoned a whole town. One person seems to recognise her and tell her to look for her past by following a diary detailing her healing trips across the land. She ends up in a town called Sai where Cassti and the other apothecaries rescued people from dying during a border war. Returning the war still goes on, but Cassti focusing on the creed to protect brings the soldiers back both from the brink of death as well as chasm of nihilism. She rescue soldiers from both side after getting caught up in a antlion's den (feels like an homage to Final Fantasy IV actually?).

I hate sand, it's course, rough and gets everywhere.

She travels to Winterblom after this where she recalls helping a local lady fighting some disease that will kill her, but she needs to survive until her daughter come of age to inherit the estate so that her egotistical nephew doesn't take it instead. After some fight with local bandits that was hired by the nephew and sorting everything out you follow the lady's end and her daughter taking over. With that Cassti recalls her real home where the Eir's Apothecaries set out and a certain man. Returning home she finds the town destroyed, one traveller mentions that he spent 10 days burying every townspeople he found after they where killed by poison. The memories returns and Cassti lead the Eir's Apothecaries, but one of their own, Trousseau, became deranged, found a poison that he unleashed on the townspeople by rain. And to do that he lured them out in the poisoned rain by killing two children and hiding them so that people started looking for them. The apothecaries was gone on a trip, but returned right at the end and tried to stop it, but everyone succumbed to the poison, except Cassti that was put on a boat that explained where she began this adventure. And the person that put her there was the person that recognised her, but she was dead all the time... I've been Sixth sensed again! Trousseau revealed that his next target was the coronation ceremony in Timberain. Cassti gets there and together with the soldiers from her trip to Sai is able to stop him and kill him.

Throné Anguis is a thief in service of the Black Snakes, an organisation run by Father and Mother. On a mission that goes awry one of Thronés close friends are killed. This incident sets up several instances where a civil war emerges for the Black Snake as Father and Mother are looking for replacements for them. Throné wants out if it, but can only follow the steps of her "parents" as they have the keys to her collar. She finds them both and fights them of listening to their story and the reveal that they killed her mother and that her father is still alive, in a city long lost to time called Lostseed. There she finds her real father Claude... some immortal that pretty much have sired every person belonging to the Black Snakes. Yeah, it's pretty creepy. Although, I have a hard time grasping why? Claude just is and almost seems enjoying finally dying as if the years have driven all desire beyond continuing the eternal loop of the Black Snakes.

Osvald von Vanstein, a scholar that is falsely accused of murdering his wife and daughter and sent to a prison island in the icy north. There he makes his escape and after getting ashore vows revenge on Harvey, his supposedly friend that betrayed him. First he returns home and finds his old assistant that tells him that her husband was killed as he questioned the charges. Furious he infiltrates the guard mansion where the local captain reveals that he was bribed by Harvey to point the finger of accusation against Osvald. Osvald burns the whole place down. Following in Harvey's footsteps he follows him to his underground laboratory where Harvey has experimented with the Seventh Source and created an abomination with the blood of Osvalds wife as she belonged to a family of light. And here it is revealed that Osvald's daughter is still alive, but Harvey escapes to a ruin in the northern mountains. Osvald follows and arrives at the closest town which seems overrun by darkness emitting from the ruins. He stops Harvey from killing his daughter and use her blood. During the fight Osvald unlocks the Seventh Source himself, the source of... LOVE? What sort of saccharine Sunday school game is this? Whatever, it's the best spell in the game that trounces Harvey and saves the day.

Partitio Yellowil, the merchant we follow from a little child to adult as he lives trough good times in the town of Orecrush and then the bad times as the townspeople are swindled by the landowner that took control of the silver mine that used to bring in the money to the town. After having enough Partitio beats up the landowners muscle and learns that the mysterious landowner was an old friend of the family, mr Roque, that built the town along them and then disappeared right before the economy tanked, setting out for the mysterious steam engine. He wanted Partitio to join him, but Partitios duty to the town and his father made him stay. After this betrayal he sets out to end poverty... it's Torneko Talon from Dragon Quest IV basically. You follow Roque to Clockbank and confronts him about his deeds, swindling Orecrush and pretty much making Clockbank a boomtown where the industry owner owns the town and its people in servitude. He even taxes them for working at the company... which was a joke in Ducktales 1987 when Scrooge travels into the future and Magica took over Duckburg. He also are on the brink of finishing the mobile steam engine and use that to own the world. Partitio forces him allow him the chance to buy the steam engine so that he can end poverty in the world. Roque agrees if Partitio can pay him 80 billion leaves (that's the currency). Ori the scriviner has followed Partitio and writes about his adventure in the local papers as he sets out to find someone that can help with that. Which he does in the nobleman Alrond, the worlds richest man. On the condition that Partitio can breathe life the in the slumbering economy of Alronds home town. So Partitio sets up the worlds first department store, gets the check and travels to Roques private island. At a press conference Roque tries to renegade on their deal as a check can hardly work since it's not the real thing. Lucky Alrond thought ahead and gathered every single leave on a ship and sails right up to the island. Roque wont relent so you beat him up on his armoured steam train and spreads industrialism and prosperity to all over the world, capitalism at its finest!

Agnea Bristami is a dancer that wants to follow in her mother's footsteps and bring smiles to everyone so she sets out from her small village... and she pretty much does that. She end up in New Delsta where she teams up with a local tavern owner and dances there until the nearby theater chief decide to get rid of the competition by breaking some bones. Agnea gets pissed off and walks right up to him in his own theater and beats him up when the superstar Dolcinea shows up and chastises him for that petty behaviour. Agnea continues to Sai where she finds a statue of her mother raised by the citizens from the poor districts as she was there 20 years ago and gave them hope as well as Dolcinea that came from that town. Agnea helps another child that wrecks havoc in town and then drives Dolcineas henchmen out of town as she intended to demolish the whole district since she couldn't stand her roots. Agnea challenge her to a singing contest and Dolcinea agrees if they go to a certain temple area that is shaped like a theater. There Agnea is chased by thugs sent out by the theater manager and corners her right before the stage... until Dolcinea's bodyguard shows up and knocks him down so that Agnea can take the stage. They create the performance of their life and is praised to the stars. Dolcinea sees the errors of her ways and amends.

Temenos Mistral is a cleric that works as an inquisitor for the pontiff until the pontiff is murdered. Temenos tracks the murderer and capture him as he tries to recreate the death of the gods as some sacrifice to the dark god Vide that was defeated by them (this is another dark god than Galdera from the last game). He then tries to figure out why and stumbles upon a genocide on a people worshipping the sun in defiance against the Moonshade Order. He tries to confront the murderer in the Sacred Flames Headquarter, but the murderer have been killed by an unknown assassin. Temenos assistant discovers that it's the head of the Sanctum Knights but is killed before telling Temons. Temenos still deduces this and follows the commander to a temple on a tropical island where the beastling lives. The commander summons a dark flame in revenge of her peoples murder and is consumed by it until Temenos ends her life, but here starts the quest to find the Moonshade Order behind all this.

Hakari Ku, the second son of the Emperor has to flee from his kingdom as his brother Mugen kills their father as he intended Hikari to take the throne. Hikari seeks out the master tactician the Eagle of Ku, Kazan, that lives his days in an arena gambling for money. Hikari helps him and frees the gladiators that lives like slaves and they in turn decide to follow Hikari. Then Kazan sends him to stop a weapon delivery to defang Mugen. Then he travels to the Home of the Clan Mei and their leader Rai Mei and gets them to follow him as well. With his forces Hikari breaks through the royal cities defences and ends up fighting Mugen again, but during the travels Hikari had to fight an inner demon that seems to crave bloodshed and destruction. And after 4 boss battles in a row Hikari stands alone after defeating Mugens generals, Hikari's own demon and Mugen twice. He is then crowned king and the world is saved.

Well, not really. The travellers gather at a spot to enjoy themselves when the eternal night appears. The 4 flames of the gods goes extinct and monsters like those from the Crimson Moon event shows up. They travel too and light up them again and learns that while they have saved the world, the forces of darkness have worked right beside them. Kazan had fooled them all, together with Ori, the dark hunter and Sister Mindt that aided Temenos. By dousing the flames with blood from a sacrifice he was able to summon Vide, the dark god and only the travellers can stop him. Lucky for me it's just one boss this time and not a prelude of 8 bosses before the final one. Doesn't help the first time since my strategy was to just use three main characters (Osvald, Temenos and Throné) and a rotating forth. The main three are at level 70 and the others hovers around 45-50. Problem is that in the middle of the battle, Vide snatch my characters and push the B-team to rescue them... my B-team being 20 levels below the others and not equipped. Didn't last long there. So back 4 hours of the game and starting to grind the others. Did all the other quest (beside a quest to defeat Galdera again) and grinded a bit so that the others where at 65 instead and the main team at 75. And getting the side jobs and such and optimised the skills and such. Plus started out with the B-team. And it worked like a charm this time around... until the second form appeared. Damn cheating final boss! Still, cool to play with all 8 characters and lucky they weren't synced all the way with the cleric job and such. Took an hour or so, but I beat him... her or whatever, they?

It was really fun playing through it. I began with Osvald pretty much for the same reason as last time. Magic and the analyse skill unlocking the weaknesses of the enemies from the beginning. They added day and night cycle, the lead up to the real final boss worked better since they actually put them as a separate sort of quest and it needed two of the characters to interact off each other creating some sort of cohesion for them all. That little interlude before and after the final boss perfect. The 2D-HD engine still looks fantastic and the music is really good, I think Partitio's theme is the best one after playing through the game and I was sceptical in the beginning. Any problems? Pretty much the same like last time, even though it's better this time around with quests actually making them interact, some people don't fit in with the rest. Agnea and Partitio hardly have anything to do with the other story wise... well, Partitio had Ori, but that's a stretch. You could have had anyone else in that role as well. But Agnea is like Primrose in the last game, incidental to the rest of the game. Also miss references to the original game, or at explanation how we go from 12 gods to 8, how there can be new continents and no sign of the others as well as other version of "From the Far Reaches Hell" book Cygnus searched for and another placement of the Gate of Finnis. Lucky I finished it a month before Zelda so there will not be another mega-RPG for a while since I don't want to be distracted when that one shows up.
